Portugal's Jews Remember Massacre

Members of Portugal's Jewish community said prayers in a downtown Lisbon square Wednesday to mark the 500th anniversary of a massacre of thousands of Jews in the Portuguese capital's streets. Chronicles from the time recount that at least 2,000 Jews were butchered and burnt alive when Catholic crowds, incited by a small group of priests, rioted for three days in 1506. Lisbon at the time was gripped by hunger amid a prolonged drought and was threatened by an outbreak of the plague. Locals, encouraged by the Inquisition, sought divine help and were told that killing Jews would reverse the drought.

Portugal's King Manuel I forced all Jews in his country to convert to Catholicism in 1496. Some fled, but those who stayed were subjected to humiliating public baptisms. They were designated "New Christians" or "Marranos," Iberian slang for pigs. Even then, they remained at risk from religious persecution and lived in designated Jewish quarters. In 1988, Portugal's then-president Mario Soares formally apologized to the Jews for the persecution.

i had heard someone talking a while back about the Jews being forced to convert to catholicism, but i did not catch the name of the King who had it done.
Now thanks to your article i call research it and learn more about it.

Thanks again!

The grace of the Lord Yeshua the Messiah, the love of Yahweh our God and the fellowship of the Ruach HaKodesh [Holy Spirit} be with you!

Another reason to bury your face in the pillow and cry out for the Jewish people.

Don't look back if you choose to fear the future. What happened in Spain and Portugal was necessary for God's plan for his children.

Those events provided the Jews with a safe haven, America. Those same events also ultimately led to the restoration of the nation of Israel.

Set your mind on things above.....

I understand your feelings.

I believe that all of the answers that the Jewish people need are available to them. I was raised in the Catholic Church but consider myself to be a Jew. Accepting Christ as Lord and Savior should never have resulted in discarding of Jewish traditions and beliefs. It was the Jewish Law that Christ fulfilled, which noone had ever been able to do.

I understand your compassion and your visceral feelings towards the Jewish people. Your faith and mine will be rewarded, as will the faith of the Jews.

And, it will happen sooner rather than later.
