Clean-up begins in northern Israel, day after tornado hits

By Haaretz Service

A clean-up operation began Wednesday across northern Israel, after a day of storms, including a tornado, wrought large-scale destruction in the area and left 70 people injured.

Israel Radio reported that Agriculture Ministry officials and insurance agents visited the western Galilee on Wednesday afternoon to inspect the damage caused by the storms.

Large numbers of greenhouses in the area sustained damage in the storms, the radio said, in particular avocado, lychee and summer fruit crops.

The village of Julis in the Galilee suffered hundreds of thousands of shekels of damage in Tuesday's strong winds. Homes in the village had broken windows and doors. Electricity poles were also knocked down, but have since been repaired.

The head of Julis local council told Israel Radio on Wednesday that not one government office had been in contact to offer assistance in the wake of the storms that affected the homes of dozens of residents.

Officials from the Public Works Department were also out in force Wednesday, inspecting damage to roads.

Tuesday's storms were the latest in a week of extreme weather conditions in Israel. On Sunday, heavy rains led to the deaths of five people - two of whom were washed away and three who were killed in a road accident after driving into pooled water.

A total of 70 people, including 20 children, were admitted to hospital in Nahariya following the violent weather. Most of the patients suffered light injuries caused by flying objects or road accidents. Two children, aged six and seven, suffered deep cuts.

Meteorologist Nachum Malik said the tornado was an indication of increasingly unpredictable weather in the country.

"When this kind of phenomenon occurs over water it is called a water spout, but when it occurs over land it is called a tornado. To use military terminology, this is an escalation in terms of weather and a very rare occurrence in Israel. This is an example of how extreme the weather in Israel has become," he said.

Note: Why? Tornado in ISRAEL yesterday! No doubt related to all the mess with Olmert and Peretz in secret meetings setting up plans for govt....and I'm suspecting Condi's trip to ME last weekend was in conjunction with this...possibly explaining the outbreak of tornados in usa this weekend.....oh mercy, Lord!

ISRAEL WANTS PEACE, BUT AT WHAT COST? by Bill Wilson 4/6
Israel Wants Peace, But At
What Cost? - Bill Wilson's Report
from Jerusalem

By Bill Wilson, KIN Senior Analyst

Wash—Apr 5—KIN—Israeli politicians and citizens alike want peace, but in the long run, they may not be willing to relinquish all that the new Olmert government may want to give in order to attain peace, according to several interviews conducted in Israel by Koenig’s International News (KIN).

Chemi Doron, a Member of the Knesset who was defeated in the recent elections, told Koenig’s International News (KIN) that the new government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert may initially put together a coalition that wants peace and will work together toward that end. But Doron says Olmert is not Sharon and does not have anywhere near the political standing and strength to move a coalition comprised of the Labor, Shas and other parties into total agreement on disengagement for Judea and Samaria. Doron says the coalition is not steady and will eventually fall apart when the tougher issues of disengagement arise—such as the disposition of Jerusalem and the right of return for Palestinians. In the end, Doron, who intends to run for the Knesset again, says the United States will try to pressure Israel to complete the so-called “roadmap for peace,” but will possibly end up with some other agreement. Doron believes disengagement is a “huge mistake” because it will result in a new base of terror.

Even some citizens of Israel are skeptical of how they just voted. One typical example is that of an older man from Galilee who said that he was part of the “Peace Now” movement in Israel. He said he had made a wrong choice in the election. He said that he has been talking to many Palestinians since the election and now realizes that Olmert has a big problem on his hands. He said that the forming of a coalition of politicians to lead Israel to establish its borders and to achieve peace will not work. Not because such a coalition can not be formed, but because of the Palestinians.

He said that the Israeli government will not be able to talk to, let alone, negotiate with Hamas. He explained that demands to give Palestinians, whoever they are, the right of return; to turn over Jerusalem to establish a Palestinian capitol; and to give up all the land—not just Samaria and Judea—are unreasonable. He said that Israel would not be able to establish defensible borders if these three demands were met. And he said that he remembers staring down the barrels of guns held by Jordanian soldiers and that if you give up a kilometer of land, they will demand yet another meter. And if another meter is given up, the Palestinians will insist on another centimeter.

Meanwhile, Mark Regev, spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry, said that to date there is no evidence Hamas has moderated its position that Israel must be destroyed. He said that the Palestinian Authority must understand that if they attack from Gaza, Israel will respond. “We will have defend our citizens the we have to,” Regev said. “The preference of Prime Minister elect Olmert is to hold out the hand for peace. If the Palestinians do not agree to a process of peace, and at the moment unfortunately the signs are negative, it will be Israel’s decision. We’ll have to decide—one, we can stay status quo or we can say we will make changes that we think will make Israel stronger and more capable of meeting future challenges.”

More than several Israeli citizens said it will be impossible to have peace with a band of renegades who want every Jew eliminated because whatever is given, more is expected. Yet the Israeli citizens voted last week to cautiously pursue resetting of Israel’s borders by giving up the covenant land God promised them. Why? Because, as they say, “We foolishly hope for peace.” Proverbs 17:28 says there is a blessing in this: “Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise.” And Isaiah 48:22 proclaims, “There is no peace, says the Lord, unto the wicked.” Intent of the heart, wicked or pure, will determine the physical peace of Jerusalem. But true peace will only come with Jesus Christ.

KATSAV INVITES OLMERT TO FORM NEXT GOVERNMENT 4/6
Katsav invites Olmert to form next government

By Akiva Eldar and Yossi Verter, Haaretz Correspondents, Haaretz Service and Agencies

President Moshe Katsav on Thursday formally asked Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to form the next government, officially making the Kadima leader the prime minister-designate.

"I am honored to announce at this time that I decided to give lawmaker Ehud Olmert the responsibility of forming the government," Katsav said.

Olmert told reporters that he will "seek to establish the most stable coalition possible," which will be based on his convergence plan - a unilateral withdrawal from large areas of the West Bank - and setting Israel's final borders by 2010.

That will be the next thing we'll have a flood of! Well, either Muslims or Holy Cows!

Holy Cow comes from the sacred cows of India.

I think a westerner heard of all the starving people in India and then saw all the sacred cows that were untouched while people starved and explaimed "holy cow" thereby making it an absurd exclamation. OK, I made the last part up, but I do believe that it originated with the holy cows of India.

Tornado, Sand-Storms and Oversized Hail Strike Israel

A small tornado ripped across the western Galilee Tuesday evening. Hail the size of golf balls also fell in the region. Scores were hospitalized. Freak stormy weather across Israel continues.

The tornado touched down during a hailstorm in the Acco region, striking the Arab villages of Julis, Fassouta and Jedaideh. Hail as big as ping-pong balls was reported as far away as Nahariya. In southern Israel, sandstorms reduced visibility to less than three feet.

Nine foot waves were reported on the Red Sea in Eilat, with telephone and cellular service knocked out for the entire city. The highways through the Negev were also covered completely by several inches of sand.

On Sunday, four Israeli Arabs were killed in northern Israel due to flooding. Sahar Mehamid, 23, from Umm al-Fahm was killed in Wadi Ara and three women from the lower Galilee village of Touran were killed in a car accident after driving through floodwater covering the road. PA resident Iyad Taha, from a village near Ramallah, also drowned in the floodwaters.

Tuesday's hail and tornado broke electric poles, overturned cars, uprooted trees, damaged crops and injured more than 75 people - most lightly. Most of those injured were struck by objects whipped up by the strong winds, including two children, who suffered deep lacerations. The villages lost electricity for many hours.

Farmers report that avocado, lychee and banana crops were severely damaged by the winds and hail.

Vadim Amar, Mayor of Julis, said that the tornado damaged dozens of homes and asked that the region be declared a natural disaster site.

Tornados are rare in Israel. The occasional ones that have occurred have mostly taken place over the ocean and along the coast.

Hail was also experienced in elevated areas such as Gush Etzion on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Elsewhere in Gush Etzion, an earthquake simulation exercise is being held Wednesday in Beitar Illit, in conjunction with the Defense Ministry, MDA, Israel Police, Israel Fire Department and others. The three-hour training event began at 11 AM.
