KABUL, Afghanistan — An Afghan man who allegedly converted from Islam to Christianity is being prosecuted in a Kabul court and could be sentenced to death, a judge said Sunday.

The defendant, Abdul Rahman, was arrested last month after his family went to the police and accused him of becoming a Christian, Judge Ansarullah Mawlavezada told the Associated Press in an interview. Such a conversion would violate the country's Islamic laws.

Rahman, who is believed to be 41, was charged with rejecting Islam when his trial started last week, the judge said.

During the hearing, the defendant allegedly confessed that he converted from Islam to Christianity 16 years ago when he was 25 and working as a medical aid worker for Afghan refugees in neighboring Pakistan, Mawlavezada said.

Afghanistan's constitution is based on Shariah law, which states that any Muslim who rejects their religion should be sentenced to death.

"We are not against any particular religion in the world. But in Afghanistan, this sort of thing is against the law," the judge said. "It is an attack on Islam. ... The prosecutor is asking for the death penalty."

The prosecutor, Abdul Wasi, said the case was the first of its kind in Afghanistan.

He said that he had offered to drop the charges if Rahman changed his religion back to Islam, but the defendant refused.

Mawlavezada said he would rule on the case within two months.

Afghanistan is a deeply conservative society and 99 percent of its 28 million people are Muslim. The rest are mainly Hindus.

And Pocket and his atheist friends were trying to make a point that Islam and Christianity is the same. I don't see any Christians putting to death another Christian who has converted to another religion. In fact, it happens all the time. Most people who are born into a Christian family can end up ATHEISTS. But those who are born into an Islamic family end up DEAD if they want to convert. Same? I don't think so!

I will pray that his Life be Saved and the God of Christianity, JESUS will turn things back around for him so that he may be an example of the LIGHT of GOD! OUR GOD!

I had written a similar sentiment about islam in the " Christian Facing Execution In Afghanistan, Converted from Muslim" thread in this section.

It's being sarcastic. By islamic "law" this man that converted has to be put to death and is facing trial. All you hear about these days is how islam is a "religion of peace". Everbody is quoting this, inlcuding the President. It doesn't matter that they constantly suicide bomb (ALL THE TIME and EVERY DAY, which is not just an isolated incident), the line that is towed is the "peaceful religion" at it's core, garbage.

Also, if a Christian would reject Jesus and say, want to become a muslim, there is no Christian "law" that says he should be executed for that decision.

...So there you go....sarcasm. wink.gif

I wonder....If we do not scantion his release and if there are not reprocussions from our government, does that take support of our government into the religious relm?

Maybe I can get out of taxes yet....

But they have no choice to release him and let the public try to kill him...they get him dead and the United States can still help them out. Let someone elsedo the dirty work. Pray! Pray! Pray! Why wouldn't they just let him come over here? We grant asylumn to everyone else in "trouble" if they return home. I'll take him.

What frustrates me is that Americans have been dying in Afghanistan for over 4 years to get rid of the Taliban and it's being replaced with the exact same thing. How is this progress? What have we accomplished? It's sickening as a Christian AND an American.

Afghan Court Drops Case Against Christian

By DANIEL COONEY, Associated Press Writer 28 minutes ago

KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan court on Sunday dismissed a case against a man who converted from Islam to Christianity because of a lack of evidence and he will be released soon, officials said.....

Rahman, meanwhile, said he was fully aware of his choice and was ready to die for it, according to an interview published Sunday in an Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

"I am serene. I have full awareness of what I have chosen. If I must die, I will die," Abdul Rahman told the Rome daily, responding to questions sent to him via a human rights worker who visited him in prison.

"Somebody, a long time ago, did it for all of us," he added in a clear reference to Jesus.

Praise the LORD, and keep praying for this man's safety. Remember he is not safe as long as he remians true to Jesus. Many Afganistan' country men can and do take the law into their hands. The court battle was a small victory. WE MUST PRAY for his complete safety!

Font: * * * * KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Hundreds of people protested in Afghanistan on Monday against a court's decision to drop a case against a man who converted from Islam to Christianity, while an official said discussions were underway as to when and how he would be released.

Officials said the case was dropped Sunday partially because of concerns that Abdul Rahman is mentally unfit to face trial. The move also followed strong pressure from Western governments.

AND I QUOTE from the article:

"Muslim clerics have threatened to incite Afghans to kill Rahman if he is freed, saying that he is clearly guilty of apostasy and deserves to die.

The defendant is being held at Kabul's notorious high-security Policharki prison. He was moved there Friday after inmates at a police detention facility reportedly threatened him. "

Muslims outside this man's cell and police station; are chanting :"death to Bush" and "death to Christians".

We need to be praying about this situation!

I'm shocked that these muslim clerics and students would do this...utterly shocked! rolleyes.gif

Yea, right.

What would happen if a bunch of Christian preachers and students went roaring through the streets chanting "death to muslims?" Do you know how much of an uproar there would be?

QUOTE
Deputy Attorney General Mohammed Eshak Aloko told The Associated Press that he may be sent overseas for psychological treatment if a medical examination that started Monday concludes that he is insane.

"Three Afghan doctors have worked on him today," Aloko said. "Sometimes he appears normal but at other times he looks very strange. His body twitches all the time."

He did not say when the evaluation would be completed.

"We will consider sending him for treatment outside the country if he needs it," Aloko said.

No country has offered asylum to Rahman, said another official familiar with the case who also declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Italy mulls Afghan convert asylum

Abdul Rahman converted to Christianity 16 years ago
Italy says it is considering granting asylum to an Afghan man who has been freed after facing the death penalty for converting to Christianity.
Abdul Rahman, 41, was released from jail late on Monday after the charges against him were dropped in a case that sparked an international outcry.

He is reportedly being held at a secret location for fear of more protests in Afghanistan demanding his execution.

Italy's cabinet is due to discuss granting him asylum on Wednesday.

The country is considering his case because "Italy has been among the first countries to come out in support of ... Abdul Rahman," a foreign ministry statement said.

Afghanistan

Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini and the deputy prime minister would ask the cabinet "to allow him to be hospitalised in Italy".

The Italian ambassador in Kabul had told Mr Fini of Mr Rahman's request "to the international community for asylum," the statement went on.

Ambiguities in constitution

Abdul Rahman was released from Kabul's main high security Pul-e-Charki prison late on Monday, having been arrested two weeks ago.

He had been charged with rejecting Islam but his case was dismissed after he was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial.

Since he's sick, they've released him... It's the right thing

Relative of Abdul Rahman

Several hundred people in Afghanistan protested on Monday against the case's dismissal.

The case has highlighted ambiguities in Afghanistan's constitution over the interpretation of religious issues.

It sparked Western criticism, with the US, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy and Sweden among those demanding Afghanistan respect international laws on freedom of religion and human rights.
