Residents flee as cyclone heads for Australian coast
Mar 19 7:42 AM US/Eastern

Thousands of residents fled their homes as the worst cyclone to threaten Australia's Queensland state for decades bore down on the coast.

Tropical Cyclone Larry was expected to hit the north-eastern state early Monday with wind gusts of up to 280 kilometres (175 mph) an hour and storm surges of up to two metres (6.6 feet), the weather bureau said.

Mandatory evacuations were enforced in several coastal areas including holiday resorts in the path of the cyclone, the national AAP news agency reported.

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie declared a disaster situation, giving authorities the legal power to forcibly remove any reluctant evacuees as the 80 km-wide stormfront headed for land.

Major airlines cancelled all flights into the city of Cairns. Shelters for evacuees were set up in inland towns.

"I want people to understand that the advice we're given is that it is very serious -- category four. The weather bureau says we haven't have one of these for decades," Beattie told national ABC radio.

The weather bureau said the cyclone, pressing in from the Coral Sea east of Townsville, could worsen to Category Five -- the highest -- by the time it made landfall.

The bureau describes a Category Five cyclone as "extremely dangerous with widespread destruction". It said Larry posed a very serious threat to life and property.

The cyclone's "very destructive core" is expected to cross the coast between Innisfail and Mission Beach between 7 am and 9 am on Monday.

Destructive winds were expected to start battering the coast between Ingham and Port Douglas earlier in the morning, with gales already being experienced along the exposed coast on Sunday evening.

Petrol stations recorded a big rise in business with residents filling up their tanks to drive south or inland, while supermarkets were inundated by people stocking up on supplies.

Cardwell Service Station owner Rachael King said business had been "non-stop" with people "getting into their cars and driving wherever they can get to".

"The population is about 13,000 ... I reckon half of them are on their way out," King said.

Beattie said the authorities were worried about hospitals and other buildings in the cyclone's path.

But Cairns resident Warwick Hatcher told ABC radio he was staying put. "Machams Beach is famous for its cyclone parties so I'm happy to stay," he said.

Disaster coordination centres were activated in Cairns and Townsville while the state government sent response teams from Brisbane in preparation for destruction caused by gale-force winds, torrential rain and flooding.

On Christmas Day 1974, category four Cyclone Tracy hit the northern Australian city of Darwin, killing 49 people and another 16 at sea. Some 70 percent of Darwins homes were destroyed or severely damaged.

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Tropical Cyclone Larry has slammed Monday into the northeastern coast of Australia with gusts up to 300 kilometers per hour (185 mph), authorities in the Australian state of Queensland report.

The eye of the category five storm passed over the beach resort of Innisfail, in the Australian state of Queensland, about 7:30 a.m. (8:30 p.m. Sunday GMT), and was soon downgraded to a still-powerful category four, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

(CBS/AP) A powerful tropical cyclone packing winds of up to 180 miles-an-hour struck northeastern Australia early Monday, injuring at least three people.

Tropical cyclone Larry smashed into the coastal community of Innisfail, about 62 miles south of Cairns, a popular jumping-off point for the Great Barrier Reef, sending hundreds of residents fleeing for higher ground, reports CBS News.

A Queensland state police spokeswoman at Innisfail said three people had been reported injured so far in the storm, including a woman who was struck by flying glass and two others who were hurt after falling down.

Federal government officials were meeting to discuss deploying troops to aid cyclone-hit regions.

The Australian weather bureau on Monday upgraded the storm to a category five — the strongest category possible.

Late Sunday, Queensland state Counter Disaster and Rescue Services executive director Frank Pagano said, “This is the most devastating cyclone that we could potentially see on the east coast of Queensland for decades ... there is going to be destruction.”

He compared the potential force of Larry to Katrina, which ravaged the Gulf Coast last August.

Queensland state Premier Peter Beattie declared a disaster situation, giving local governments the power to enforce mandatory evacuations.

Peter Rekers, a spokesman for the Queensland state Counter Disaster and Rescue Service, said he was worried about the cyclone's size — with strong winds expected along up to 250 miles of the coast.

“The big concern for us — if one town is hit by devastation then towns from the surrounding area can come down to assist — (but) in this case, we're likely to see four or five towns across being devastated at much the same time,” he told Australian Broadcasting Corp. “So they're not going to be as easy to get to each other and look after each other.”

Powerful cyclone hits Australia

By David Crisafulli

INNISFAIL, Australia (Reuters) - One of the most powerful cyclones to hit Australia in decades lashed the northern city of Cairns on Monday with winds of up to 290 kph (180 mph), ripping roofs off houses, uprooting trees and flattening crops.

There were no reports of deaths by late Monday but authorities said about 30 people had received minor injuries.

The eye of Cyclone Larry crossed the coast just south of Cairns, the sugar-growing town of Innisfail taking the maximum-category five storm's full force as it left a trail of destruction along 300 km of coast.

Larry flattened cane fields and banana crops and roads were strewn with trees and power lines. The roofs of homes were ripped off "like the top of sardine cans", a Reuters witness said.

"She was howling like a banshee. The walls were getting sucked in and out and making an incredible sound," Paul Leyton told Reuters as he stood outside his home, which had lost its roof, in the main street of Innisfail.

As emergency services began to survey the damage, the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Brisbane was already monitoring Cyclone Wati, currently at category two strength. The storm, about 2,000 km to the east of Cairns, was taking a similar track to Larry, the centre said.

"As Larry goes, we have got to worry about Wati," meteorologist Don Cameron told Reuters, adding it was not yet known when it might strike the coast of Queensland state

For anyone that has been following the hurricanes in relation to the Balance Bible Code , Cyclone Larry was 630 days (EST) after that Picture Code, and this is half the 1260 days discussed in the article posted below half-a-year ago!

It is also 70 days after Storm Zeta, and this half-way point (630 days) was the next logical numeric point for an event after Storm Zeta.

So God is not letting up on this!

Blessed be His Name! He is trying to get our attention!

user posted image

... (This complex numeric is essential put here for future reference come 777 days from now! But if you are good at math and bible prophecy numbers --- hang on!)

The series of hurricanes that started with hurricane Charlie are following the outline of Dan. 9:24-27, which is 7 weeks + 62 weeks + 1 week, with the last week further divided in half, which ruffly corresponds to tabernacles. {I say "ruffly" for the sake of argument. I have no doubt all is exact!}

This is a little complex, but there are also 70 x 7 days from the Balance Bible Code, etc., to Sunday, when the storm will approach Florida, (which is when they initially forecasted it to hit, but it was delayed! God is marking both Sunday and Monday of Oct. 23 and 24 as significant.) The pattern is this:

7 days + 483 days from the 390th day that Ezekiel laid on his side up 1260 + 1335 years to the day, (with the week of his calling forwarded as well, Ezek. 1). {See numeric on Balance Bible Code.} And the inverse is true, 483 [49 days to hurricane Charlie from the Balance Bible Code plus 434 days to Wilma] + 3.5 + 3.5 days. (We are speaking of the seven days of June 20-27, 2004.) Thus, today as I write (Fri., Oct. 21, 2005) is 434 days from Friday 13th, Aug, 2004 when the Olympics began in Greece (and praised the gods of stone) and the word came to me, "The Axe is laid to the root," (see above image) and also when hurricane Charlie struck Florida. --- It was the first of seven over the course of 62 weeks as per Dan. 9:24-27., etc.)

The hurricane seems to be straddling this one or two -day difference between the seven days of tabernacles on the Jewish calendar and the seven days of the 70th week of Daniel as being a 491st day rather than the customary 490 days even. This is possible since the 50th jubilee day follows 49 days, and 490 (70 weeks) is also calculated as 49 x 10 thereby signifying a jubilee, and hence the 50th day of the tenth cycle of these ten 49's could terminate 490 or 491 days.

The timing of the hurricane is essentially straddling these two time frames --- that is, the seven days of the 70th week (of Dan. 9) counting from from the Balance Bible Code, and the seven-days of tabernacles as from Tishri 14-21 or 15-22. {See 490 x 5 years ago to Nehemiah's decree on 360 calendar, compare Neh. 1 with Dan. 9:24-27.} The pattern is all the more complex because from the said week of June 20-27, 2004 until now is 483 or 490 days, but from June 20-27, 2004 unto the anniversary of the siege of Jerusalem 1260 + 1335 years earlier (to the day) is also 1260 days exactly. This means that the 1260 is being divided as 483 + 777 or 490 + 770 days = 1260 days! (In other words, 777 days from now is the anniversary of when the siege of Jerusalem began in Dec. of 589 BC (Tevet 5-12, with the 10th being the exact day. We are using the360 bible prophecy calendar.) We shall see what will happen 770 to 777 days from now!

Thus, from the time Ezekiel finished laying on his side in his symbolic siege of Jerusalem on behalf of Israel 390 days (Ezek. 4), until the actual start of the siege of Jerusalem are 1260 days --- and these two events are being forwarded in time 1260 + 1335 years. And the 1260 is divided by the hurricanes as a sign, as explained, by 483 + 777 = 1260, etc. Moreover, from the Lion-of-Judah bible code (which works in conjunction with the Balance Bible Code) are 1150 days to the start of the siege of Jerusalem, (Dan. 8). The 1260 emphasizes the end of the week and the 1150 the start of that week; hence, between the two bible codes are 110 days less this one week. (110 + 1150 = 1260 days.) And this is only the tip of the proverbial ice burg! ...

Thanks for the reminder Shekel!

With the numbers working out the way they have, 770-770 days from the code date would bring us to Aug 6-13. That seems to be the height of the Hurricane Season here in Florida. Yikes, better get my water and canned goods ready. Doesn't seem that far from now... 140-147 days!

Cyclone (Hurricane) Larry:

QUOTE
INNISFAIL, Australia (Reuters) - One of the most powerful cyclones to hit Australia in decades lashed the northern city of Cairns on Monday with winds of up to 290 kph (180 mph), ripping roofs off houses, uprooting trees and flattening crops.

He is trying to get our attention!

... (This complex numeric is essential put here for future reference come 777 days from now! But if you are good at math and bible prophecy numbers --- hang on!)

The series of hurricanes that started with hurricane Charlie are following the outline of Dan. 9:24-27, which is 7 weeks + 62 weeks + 1 week, with the last week further divided in half, which ruffly corresponds to tabernacles. {I say "ruffly" for the sake of argument. I have no doubt all is exact!}

Australia begins cyclone clean-up
Tuesday, 21 March 2006, 03:21 GMT

Government help has been promised for families left homeless
A clean-up operation is under way on the north-east Australian coast hit by a powerful tropical cyclone on Monday.
Tropical Cyclone Larry smashed into Queensland at Innisfail, about 100km (60 miles) south of Cairns, tearing off roofs and leaving thousands homeless.

Queensland state leader Peter Beattie predicted a "long, slow recovery" but praised emergency services' response.

Troops began moving aid into Innisfail on Tuesday, as residents picked their way through the debris-filled streets.

Packing winds of up to 290km/h (180mph), the category five storm hit the coast early on Monday, flattening homes, uprooting trees and destroying sugar and banana crops.

I just think it says a lot about us as Australians

Queensland leader Peter Beattie

About a dozen people sustained minor injuries but no-one was killed. A state of emergency has been declared.

Speaking from Innisfail, about 95km (60 miles) south of Cairns, Mr Beattie said food, clean water, power generators and tarpaulins would be delivered to affected areas on Tuesday.

"The whole bloody place is blown apart and [the emergency services and local communities are] standing there fixing it up," he said. "I just think it says a lot about us as Australians."

He said the bill for the cyclone was likely to run into tens of millions of dollars.

Warning it would be long road to recovery in some parts of the state, Mr Beattie urged residents to consider leaving until essential services were restored.

Officials said it could be a week before power was restored to more than 80,000 homes left without electricity.

Relief pledge

Prime Minister John Howard has pledged help for the affected areas.

It was like the sound of a steam train coming across the bay - it was terrifying

He promised emergency relief aid for families made homeless by the cyclone and said he would visit the region on Wednesday.

"We are not going to leave people swinging because of a natural disaster," Mr Howard told the Nine television network.

US President George W Bush telephoned Mr Howard to offer his sympathies over the devastation caused by the cyclone, the White House said.

"Prime Minister Howard thanked the president for his concern for the Australian people and noted that it was appreciated," a White House spokesman said.

Katrina lessons

Australian officials - keen to avoid the criticism that followed the US government's response to Hurricane Katrina - began issuing warnings about the storm on Saturday.

Queensland State Emergency Service spokesman Ben Creagh said they had studied the lessons from Katrina and there had been "no complacency" in their planning.

Homeless people are being housed in government-run shelters and efforts are under way to repair sewerage systems and restore water supplies.

A spokesman for Australia's attorney general said troops were moving tarpaulins into Innisfail to cover houses that had lost their roofs.

The area is an important centre for Australia's banana and sugar cane industries and farmers say production has been badly hit.

The Australian Banana Growers' Council said 80% of the country's banana crop had been wiped out and as many as 4,000 plantation workers could lose their jobs.

Innisfail banana grower Brian McElhinney told Reuters news agency the cyclone had destroyed his entire crop.

The storm was initially a category five - the strongest possible - but was downgraded to a category four shortly after it crossed the coastline.

INNISFAIL, Australia (AP) -- Australian weather forecasters warned on Tuesday that more wild weather was on its way, with a Category 2 cyclone brewing in the Coral Sea even as the country was taking stock of the damage caused by what officials said was the most powerful cyclone to hit the country in three decades.

Cyclone Wati was churning slowly toward northeast Australia and was expected to be off the coast later in the week, several hundred kilometers south of the region hammered by Cyclone Larry, a Category 5 storm with winds up to 290 km/h (180 mph), Tropical Cyclone Warning Center senior forecaster Jeff Callahan said.

Wati is expected to turn south in about a day or so, and then move parallel to the coast. If it stays out to sea, as expected, the likely impact could be high waves and maybe gale force winds at sea.

The Weather Bureau said that at 10 am Tuesday (11 p.m. Monday GMT), Wati was located over the eastern Coral Sea about 475 nautical miles east north-east of Mackay and moving west at about 14 knots.

The first satellite pic in Marta's post had me really confused, as it shows Australia's northwest area rather than the northeast area where Cyclone Larry actually struck. But I think the source must have used file footage of a previous cyclone in error. Cyclone Larry came upon us with very little forwarning for many. I found out only about 24 hrs before it hit the coast. Fortunately the area in which Larry did hit is relatively sparsely populated, meaning nowhere near as densely populated as say the US eastcoast area. Towns are few and far between in the north east region of Australia. But still consider that there are no reported fatalities from a cat 5 cyclone is incredible. We are watching Wati now with a little more respect perhaps. The most optimistic outlook would be for Wati to weaken into a rain depression. Please pray for that outcome.

dcmorse.
Adstar
Yes they are now predicting that wati will turn into a rain depression and stay out to sea. Also the damage estimates have gone up to over 500 million and still rising. They will have to replant the banana trees lost in the cyclone and we will not have a Banana crop for 18 months at least. Australia will have to import all its bananas. The sugar cane industry has also lost 10% of its crop.

Heavy rain hampers cyclone cleanup
Banana, sugar growers particularly hard hit

Wednesday, March 22, 2006; Posted: 1:00 a.m. EST (06:00 GMT)

INNISFAIL, Australia (CNN) -- Torrential rain is hampering recovery efforts in northeastern Australia in the wake of Cyclone Larry, with power and water supplies still not restored in the hardest-hit town of Innisfail and much of the surrounding region.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard is visiting the storm-wracked region Wednesday and is expected to announce a package of relief measures to assist with the recovery.

Although there were few injuries and no fatalities after the category 5 storm hit the far northern east coast of Australia on Monday, the damage to property and agricultural crops has been enormous; some estimates place the damage as high as $750 million (A$1 billion).

Complicating factors is the presence of the category 3 Cyclone Wati off the Queensland State coast. Forecasters say the storm is acting erratically and might yet make landfall in the next few days. The cyclone had earlier been expected to turn south and not have a major impact on the region.

Severe cyclone heads for Australia oil and mining region
Mar 29 6:56 PM US/Eastern

user posted image

Some of Australia's biggest oil and mining operations shut down and residents were told to take immediate shelter as severe cyclone Glenda bore down on the country's west coast packing winds of up to 265 kilometers per hour (165 miles per hour).

State emergency services in Western Australia issued a "red alert" for people in coastal areas around the massive oil and ore ports of Karratha and Dampier, meaning residents should halt evacuations and take shelter.

"The cyclone is basically very close and there are extreme winds and a lot of danger. If people haven't evacuated by now, it's probably too late," said spokesman Jim Cahill.

Glenda was a category four cyclone, just one level below the maximum five, and was forecast to make landfall later Thursday in the Pilbara, Australia's main iron ore producing region and the site of major oil and gas fields. The region has a population of about 10,000.

At 2100 GMT (Wednesday), Glenda was a "very dangerous, severe tropical cylcone" located about 185 kilometers northwest of Karratha, moving southwest towards the coast at 15 kilometers per hour, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

Gales up to 100 kilometers per hour and heavy rains were already lashing the Pilbara coast early Thursday and were expected to increase to "very destructive gusts" of 250 kilometers an hour as the cyclone center nears land, it said.

Glenda is expected to create a very dangerous storm tide and flooding in the region, which has already seen substantial rains in recent weeks, the height of the eastern Indian Ocean cyclone season.

Ahead of Glenda, mining and oil giants BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Santos and Woodside Petroleum shut down offshore rigs in the path of the storm and closed port operations in and around Karratha.

Woodside and Santos sent floating oil rigs from their big Cossack and Mutineer Exeter oilfields out to sea away from Glenda's route.

BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto suspended all shipping of iron ore from its Pilbara mines, but were continuing mining operations.

"At this stage we are in full tie-down at the ports, which means basically we have sent all our ships out to sea and stopped all operations at the port," a Rio Tinto spokeswoman said.

Glenda is due to hit just 10 days after a top category five cyclone, Larry, caused widespread devastation in the country's tropical northeast.

Larry destroyed or damaged hundred of homes and wiped out banana and sugar cane crops, leaving a damage bill expected to top one billion dollars (700 million US). No one was killed.

The northwest Australian coast is known as "cyclone alley" and Glenda is the sixth tropical storm to hit so far this season.

Glenda did not Hit with full force. It stayed out to sea and followed down the coast. There has been a lot of rain and wind damage but thankfully not as bad as Larry.

Interesting thought Marta about the Oil and water. A lot of the oil found in the sea is found in seas that are prone to great storms. The North Sea oil deposits north of Scotland also suffer from bad storms.
