Full Version: The Poles Are Drifting...

For some reason the magnetic North Pole is drifting more quickly than usual, and according to scientists, within fifty years it'll move from Northern Canada to Siberia, Russia!

"SAN FRANCISCO - Earth's north magnetic pole is drifting away from North America and toward Siberia at such a clip that Alaska might lose its spectacular Northern Lights in the next 50 years, scientists said Thursday. Despite accelerated movement over the past century, the possibility that Earth's modestly fading magnetic field will collapse is remote. But the shift could mean Alaska may no longer see the sky lights known as auroras, which might then be more visible in more southerly areas of Siberia and Europe.

The magnetic poles are part of the magnetic field generated by liquid iron in Earth's core and are different from the geographic poles, the surface points marking the axis of the planet's rotation.

Scientists have long known that magnetic poles migrate and in rare cases, swap places. Exactly why this happens is a mystery.

"This may be part of a normal oscillation and it will eventually migrate back toward Canada," Joseph Stoner, a paleomagnetist at Oregon State University, said Thursday at an American Geophysical Union meeting.

Previous studies have shown that the strength of the Earth's magnetic shield has decreased 10 percent over the past 150 years. During the same period, the north magnetic pole wandered about 685 miles out into the Arctic, according to a new analysis by Stoner.

The rate of the magnetic pole's movement has increased in the last century compared to fairly steady movement in the previous four centuries, the Oregon researchers said.

At the present rate, the north magnetic pole could swing out of northern Canada into Siberia. If that happens, Alaska could lose its Northern Lights, which occur when charged particles streaming away from the sun interact with different gases in Earth's atmosphere.

The north magnetic pole was first discovered in 1831 and when it was revisited in 1904, explorers found that the pole had moved 31 miles.

For centuries, navigators using compasses had to learn to deal with the difference between magnetic and geographic north. A compass needle points to the north magnetic pole, not the geographic North Pole. For example, a compass reading of north in Oregon is about 17 degrees east of geographic north.

In the study, Stoner examined the sediment record from several Arctic lakes. Since the sediments record the Earth's magnetic field at the time, scientists used carbon dating to track changes in the magnetic field.

They found that the north magnetic field shifted significantly in the last thousand years. It generally migrated between northern Canada and Siberia, but it sometimes moved in other directions, too."

Also, I've heard that if a large, direct enough solar flare occurs that the earth's poles will swap places, flipping the earth upside-down and causing the outer crust to break off as the earth abruptly changes it's rotational direction, thus causing the "great earthquake like none that has ever occured since man's creation" described in the book of Revelation. Scientists themselves say that the sun has been acting strange, and they have said that the next period of high activity for the sun begins in 2012.

Pole Shifts and Apocalypse

I myself believe that 12/22/12 will be the end of it all, with 12/22/10 possibly being the Rapture, at least according to Bible codes, Mayan prophecy, and other things that I'll discuss in another topic.

Wow, that was interesting.
thanks for sharing that.
Things are happening at a very fast pace now.
Oh Lord Jesus I feel you are coming soon.
I love you and please keep me from stumbling.
I know you pick me up again and again, and we
can't wait until you pick us up to be with you in
heaven forever.

The Earth's magnetic poles might be starting to flip say researchers who have seen strange anomalies in our planet's magnetic field.

The magnetic field is created by the flow of molten iron inside the Earth's core. These circulation patterns are affected by the planet's rotation, so the field normally aligns with the Earth's axis - forming the north and south poles.

But the way minerals are aligned in ancient rock shows that the planet's magnetic dipole occasionally disappears altogether, leaving a much more complicated field with many poles all over the planet. When the dipole comes back into force, the north and south poles can swap places.

The last reversal happened about 780,000 years ago, over a period of several thousand years. Now Gauthier Hulot from the Institute of Earth Sciences in Paris and his colleagues think they have spotted early signs of another reversal.

South African anomaly
They used data from the Ørsted satellite to study strange variations in the Earth's magnetic field. In particular, one large patch under South Africa is pointing in the opposite direction from the rest of the Earth's field and has been growing for hundreds of years.

The anomalies have already reduced the overall strength of the planet's magnetic field by about 10 per cent. If they continue to grow at the same rate, the Earth's dipole will disappear within just two millennia.

But Ørsted is the first satellite to take a snapshot of the Earth's magnetic field for 20 years, and such scant data makes it difficult to predict future shifts.

"We can't really tell what will happen," says Hulot. "But we speculate that we're in an unusual situation that might be related to a reversal."

Although there is no doubt that magnetic field reversals have occurred in the past, the reasons for this aberrant behavior remain obscure. The most likely cause is that secular variations (short-term variations on the order of a few hundred years) in the magnetic field may trigger a complete reversal of the stronger dipole or long-term, field that defines which way is magnetic north and which is south.

The dipole field regularly undergoes cycles of strong and weak intensity, each cycle lasting about 10,000 years. Statistically, there is evidence that about every 20 to 25 cycles, the strength of the dipole field is at its weakest at the same time that the secular is at its strongest, but in the opposite direction. This may be enough to flip the main field on its back, much like a player at Indian wrestling taking advantage of a stronger opponent at an opportune moment.

So we have a patch here in South Africa that points the other way.
I thought the south coast looked a bit like the north coast lately. biggrin.gif

Seriously, I have been following this for some time. Its very interesting, We are overdue for a reversal.

Isaiah said it long before the scientist.
Isaiah 24:1
Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants theeof.

but don't stop there.....open your Bible and read the whole chapter!

Anybody ever read any of Michael Creighton's books? Creighton is a genius by any standard. After completing medical school he decided to pursue writing instead. If you really think about his storylines it is clear that he truely understands that humans are always playing with fire. The smarter we are, the bigger trouble we get ourselves into. His last book is called "State Of Fear". The subject was the greenhouse affect and the storyline reveals how we have been studying such phenonmena for such a short time that there is no way of telling if we are actually causing this process or if it is a natural evolution of our planet.

Between special interest groups, who have become drunk with power and will lie or worse to maintain their pace in the race, and the media, who use fear to sell their product, we're all caught in a web. The legacy of the Bible and God's promise gives me a grip on reality.
