BIBLE PROPHECY: SANHEDRIN: TEMPLE MUST BE REBUILT
J. Grant Swank, Jr.

"The Sanhedrin is researching ways to renew the deepest roots of our faith – to renew Temple service, reunite Jewish legal tradition and inspire the Jewish people to aspire to greatness. Our people have one path before us, and we will continue to march toward our destiny."

So spoke Sanhedrin spokesman Rabbi Chaim Richman in delivering detail to media. Arutz-7 News reports that the Sanhedrin, that body of 71 rabbis and scholars who claim eventually to be Judaism’s "top legal assembly, will not cease until the temple is constructed.

The Sanhedrin admits the present-tense mix of despair and elation within the Jewish populace of Israel. However, they will proceed without hesitation. They believe that it is the command of deity that presses them upon their mission. Also, it is the spiritual dimension of their nation that must come more prominently to the fore. Therefore, the temple will be. No matter the obstacles.

All of this is particularly interesting to biblical Christians. They scour the Bible for the latest detail concerning prophecies regarding the Second Coming of Christ. With like ardor, they scour the news for any specific related to Israel, the temple reconstruction plans, the Temple Mount, and military conflicts increasing or decreasing in the Middle East.

Christians research such primary passages as Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 for Jesus’ clear, literal statements regarding signs which will precede His rule upon the Earth. Then they research the symbolic passages in the Book of Revelation, the vision given by Jesus to John the Beloved Apostle when the latter was on the Isle of Patmos off of Greece.

There are Old Testament passages as well, specifically Ezekiel 36-39, which sets forth the return of Jews to their homeland in the "latter times." Such took place on May 14, 1948, when the UN established Israel as a nation.

Last Saturday I, a Gentile Christian, decided to attend the city’s most popular Conservative synagogue. The service began at 9:30. It closed at noontime. The female cantor conducted the proceedings. There were about 50 gathered in the chapel, not the main sanctuary. There were two youths present. The rest were adults of varying ages, some couples attending together.

I listened to the worshipers recite Hebrew from their Service Books. The main accent of course is studying and worshiping from The Torah — the first five books of the Old Testament. These are the Books of Law provided by divine inspiration to Moses.

It was an enriching experience for me. The Jews were most cordial to me, knowing I was a guest from a village church outside the city. They were more than willing to explain various details concerning worship to me. Afterward, there was a brief fellowship sharing alongside the chapel.

As I sat there in the synagogue, I thought of these Jews’ counterparts there in the Holy Land, the Sanhedrin especially. There was like ardor half way across the world, those Jews in the old country preparing for the next temple, its rituals returned, its prayers offered.

One of these days, because God has declared it, the temple will be reconstructed in Jerusalem. I once visited there. I recall seeing the Wailing Wall. Our guides told us that that was the last supporting wall of Solomon’s Original Temple. From what I read today, there are various Jewish scholars who debate present-tense the exact dimensions and location of the original temple. In fact, that was the theme of the last meeting recently of the Sanhedrin. Where really was the original temple in today’s Old Jerusalem?

So the research continues. The anticipation builds. The Jews are excited. The Christians are excited. Prophesy is renewed as a live study. Prayers go upward to the heavenly throne. Where will it all end?

Christians believe that the temple will be built sometime prior to the Tribulation’s mid-point, that is, three and a half years into the about-seven year "times of vengeance," to use Jesus’ phrasing. At the mid-point, the devil’s political ruler AntiChrist will leave his city-of-seven-hills, Rome, to thrust himself into the Holy of Holies, desecrating it just as Antiochus Epiphanes desecrated it in the 2nd century BC. Epiphanes slaughtered a pig in the 30-foot square holy room. It was the Maccabees who then revolted against that pagan move, finally winning out, all such celebrated in Hanukkah.

Next? What’s next?

The present Sanhedrin is determined to find out, indeed to help form it. The Christians sit on the edge of their seats wondering what’s next according to scriptural prophecy. Day by day. Week by week. Only the Father knows the day and hour of the Son’s return. Yet the Son has left believers plenty of material for study.

And so the reading goes on and on. With delight, I might add.

3) metaph. the spiritual temple consisting of the saints of all ages joined together by and in Christ

I would suggest that one consider the possibility of the holy place referred to in the setting of the 70th week is the temple mount area and not a re-built edifice (temple). The actual temple was destroyed in the first century and is no longer there. It is possible that the man of lawlessness will sit in the temple of "his" god [the Alsqa Mosque], showing that he is god. There are no instructions contained in Scripture to re-build a temple for the Lord before He establishes His millennial Kingdom. There are instructions for re-building in this future time frame. [Ezekiel 40-48]

It is possible that something could be re-built by the Jews to be in place during the 70th week. It is also possible that the current setting of the temple mount only may be in view. If so, then we may be closer to the Lord's return than some think. The current situation in the Middle East is not conducive to placing a Jewish temple on the mount and if current events move directly into the 70th week, then it is unlikely for re-building to take place during the Lord's hour of trial.

The temple is seen in Revelation several times during the tribulation on earth, but it is God's temple in heaven and not one on the earth. In fact, the outer court of the temple mount on the earth is "without" God's temple (there will be a temple there that is not God's and the man of lawlessness will sit in it) and the mount (holy place) will be trampled (controlled) by the little horn and his followers during his 42 month rule. [Revelation 11:1-2, 11:19, 14:15-17, 15:5-8, 16:17]

The first 1,260 days will include Satan's bid for control over the earth through his agents and followers. This period will be an extreme time of devastation and destruction including the fall of the "great city" of the Gentiles (nations) and the release of millions of Satan's angelic hosts. The Lord will continue to harbor (protect) national Israel from invasion and occupation (this has been the case since 1948 up to this day) until just before midweek. Satan's pawns will then be in position without opposition to invade, occupy, and add the Holy Land, Jerusalem, and the temple mount area to his dominion.

The rebuilding of the Temple requires a piece treaty between Israel and the Palastinians. If it should come this will mark the beginning of the tribulation week. The pretribers will all be stuck here with me. All we need is for the covenant to be set and then they will build the temple. The only hinderence to doing so is the politics in the region.

Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make [it] desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

I'm not convinced that a temple needs to be rebuilt. And there is no reason to believe that the words "with many" includes Israel. The word for covenant is "beriyth" which is "an alliance" or confederacy. Alliances are made with friends. Peace treaties are made with enemies. I can't believe that Israel will ever become allies with it's enemies...Arab neighbors.

The temple is translated a shrine. This could be the Al'aqsa mosque or the Dome of the Rock. I don't believe it's a Jewish temple or a "peace treaty".

The Ark of the Covenant

The ark, a relic from the past, which Moses' craftsmen – anointed by the Spirit for the task – created for the tabernacle in the wilderness, will soon be discovered. What a celebration for Israel and what a testimony to the world this discovery will be! This will testify to every nation on earth that the Jewish people are indeed a chosen company. But, more than what it says about Israel will be what it says about the true and living God of the Bible. This ark dates back to the exodus out of Egypt and the beginning of both the sacrificial system of the law and the preparation to enter the Promised Land as the nation of Israel.

The ark both represented and signified the presence of Jehovah God. It was not Moses' idea; but, it was commanded by God. "And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about" "And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat" "And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel" (Exodus 25:10-11,18,21-22).

God said that this would be His meeting place with His nation, Israel. God's literal presence would rest upon the ark. No one could touch it, but they would be responsible to carry it with the staves that they slipped through the rings at each corner. The High Priest, who offered the sacrifice at this ark that was placed behind a great veil, was sanctified carefully before he could go inside the veil. If he failed to purify himself, he was smitten with immediate death.

After many years Solomon built the great temple in Jerusalem to be the dwelling place of this ark. God's Shekinah glory did not inhabit the temple alone, but dwelt with the ark. Because the glory of God was manifest with this ark, it became the source of great fear both to God-fearing Jews and often to their enemies. It's thrilling to read the Biblical stories of victory associated with this physical expression of God's wonderful presence.

This great representation of the Jewish faith apparently disappeared before the army of Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the temple in 586 B.C. This means that it is not likely that anyone has seen this awesome relic for 2,594 years. Of course, there are a host of people who do not believe it still exists. Some believe that Nebuchadnezzar's army either destroyed it for its gold content or carried it away to Babylon never to be returned. There are several other possible answers as to why they believe it does not exist.

Among those that believe it does exist, there are also different opinions as to its present hidden place. One man, who I personally met, says he discovered the ark, looked at it, and knows exactly where it is located. He says it is under Mount Calvary where Jesus Christ was crucified. He claims that he dug from 1979 until 1982 before he finally reached the ark. Since it was covered over in a stone case, he used a colonoscope to identify the contents.

It is his opinion that when Jesus Christ was crucified, the blood ran down through the fissures caused by the earthquake and actually fell on the mercy seat of the ark. I remember hearing him tell this story on a television program on which he was a guest. I knew very little about this man, Ron Wyatt, but the story sure sounded exciting. I was skeptical and later decided that it was only Ron's dream story.

There is also a report that says the ark is in the possession of the Vatican in Rome. A Benedictine monk, named Nelson Canode, claims that he had the following experience while he was serving at a monastery about 30 miles from Rome, "Mr. Canode testified that he once served as a Benedictine monk at the monastery at Subiaco, Italy, located 30 miles from Rome. While there, Canode says that he was taken to a room in a cave about four stories under the monastery. Here in this room were deposited ancient artifacts that he helped to move back and forth between Subiaco and the underground vaults of the Vatican. When he asked his superiors what these items were, he was told they included the disassembled Tabernacle and the Ark." (In Search of Temple Treasures, Randall Price, p. 99).

I have read about efforts being made by Jewish representatives to persuade the Vatican to return items that were taken from the Jerusalem temple in 70 A.D. Whether they have the actual ark or other sacred items, it is without a doubt that there are Jewish treasures in Rome. The Roman church would have inherited anything that had not been destroyed for its content, gold, or other valuables from the Roman authorities.

The search for the ark exists all the way to Ethiopia. It is claimed by the Ethiopians that the ark is hidden in the sanctuary chapel of Saint Mary of Zion Church in Axum, Ethiopia. Here is an account from the Ethiopian royal chronicles called Kebra Nagast or "Glory of the Kings" that was printed in Price's book, "This work says the original Ark was transferred from Jerusalem to Ethiopia by Menelik I, the alleged son of the Queen of Sheba (an Ethiopian ruler) and King Solomon. A Zadokite priest who left with Menelik I took the original Ark from the Holy of Holies in Solomon's Temple and left a replica in its place. When Menelik I discovered that his entourage possessed the Ark, he surmised that they must have had divine approval, since God c ertainly would have prevented the removal of the Ark had He not willed it. "The account further states that the Ark was taken from Jerusalem to protect it from Manasseh, who would later defile the Temple with idolatrous images. Other traditions say that the Ark was taken first to a local temple in Elephantine, an island in Upper Egypt that had a Jewish community." (Ibid, pp. 131-132).

Bypassing an almost endless list of persons and locations that lay claim to the ark's existence, I believe there is only one possible location. I believe that the ark is somewhere under the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The Ark of the Covenant is the single most sacred relic of Jewish history and proof of God's hand upon them. Personally, I believe that this part of temple worship must be preserved and found to complete the Tribulation temple. It will be powerfully used to prepare Jewish people for the transition to the faith of the true Messiah, Jesus Christ.

There are a great number of Jewish rabbis, Christian leaders, and even archaeologists that believe the ark is beneath the Temple Mount. After the war of 1967, rabbis led an effort to dig beneath the Temple Mount in an effort to find the treasures of the temple. Here is a quote from Rabbi Goren, one of the leaders, "We were very close to the place on the Temple Mount where the Holy of Holies was located. We were very close, beneath the Holy of Holies. We believe that the holy Ark made by Moses, and the table from the Temple, and the candelabra made by Moses, along with other very important items, are hidden very deep underneath the Holy of Holies, We started digging and we came close to the place; we were not more than 30 or 40 yards away." (Ibid, p. 166).

Their effort was stopped when the news leaked and an uproar was created by the Arabs who were connected to the Muslim sites. The Israeli police were directed by the Israeli government to intervene, the digging was stopped, and a wall was built to close off the area. All the searching for the ark was over until the appointed time.

Soon, when the war of Gog and Magog is finished and the world knows that there is a true and supernatural God, the time will arrive. The third and last Jewish temple cannot be authentic without the Ark of the Covenant. Any respect for the Muslim religion will end with the war of Gog and Magog. As a result, the Temple Mount will be swept clean and the Temple will be rebuilt. Very likely, the great fire from God on the Russia and Muslim hordes will also touch the mount and obliterate every semblance of the false religion of Allah.

It will only be days after the peace treaty between Israel and what is left of the Arab world, along with the Antichrist from Babylon, that the ark will be located. Then, the world will know.

Where is the Lord's temple and the ark during the tribulation period?

On the earth, or in heaven?

And who are those that worship therein?

Revelation
11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.

11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail

The answer is given:

His temple and ark are in heaven

......and those that worship therein are the 24 elders and the great multitude

Next question: when does Revelation 11 take place in the time frame of the 70th week [the tribulation period] decreed for national Israel?

The answer here is at the midpoint of the week because the beast's rule for 42 months begins at midweek and transpires over the next 42 months [last 1,26 days of the tribulation period]

So when and how did those who are worshiping in His temple get there?

Before the tribulation period begins and by the Lord's "harpazo" action

These are seen in chapters 4,5, and 7 even before the judgments of the tribulation begin in chapter 8

This analysis is an integral part of the proof of a pre-tribulational catching away of the church

On May 14, 1948 the physical birth of Israel came to pass.
The spiritual birth is yet to happen,...but it will happen.

Our physical bodies herein dwells the Lord in our hearts.
Unfortunately, national Israel does not recognize Jesus as their Messiah. If they did,......They would recognise His sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary, and therefore would not desire a third temple.
But everything is near completion and ready on a moments notice for them to build the third temple.
Prior to the birth of Israel as a nation,.....many Jews were living and multiplying there, and yet many stated that Israel would never be a nation again. But it happened.
Again many today state that a third temple will not be built, even though the proof of overwhelming evidence that preparations are near complete.

If Israel today were all believers in Christ Jesus,...Then I would be tempted to believe that a third temple would not be built. But today, it is just the opposite.
When the Lord came the first time,...the Mosaic law was in effect up until the crucifiction of Our Lord Jesus. The Sanhedrin was present including the people of Israel, and the temple and animal sacrifices.
When Daniels 70th week begins,......It will in a sense be as though time picked back up from before the Crucifiction of Our Lord Jesus. The temple will be present again, sacrificing of animals will be active, the Sanhedrin will be present again.
