Election Shocker!

Biblical scholars in Colorado Springs have uncovered startling evidence that Senator John McCain may be the Antichrist. Their conclusions, while highly controversial, may have a dramatic impact on the 2008 elections, since many Bible-believing Christians have already expressed doubts about McCain's fealty to Christianity.

The analysis was conducted by the respected True Bible Society, and it will be published next month in the End Times Journal.

The analysis was especially ironic, given that it came out just one day after McCain was accused of subtly hinting that Barack Obama could be the Antichrist. McCain ran a commercial depicting Obama as "The One," giving rise to charges that he was sending a subliminal messages to anti-Obama Christians.

"What started us looking at this issue is the fact that Senator McCain has declared his intention to maintain US forces in Iraq for a hundred years," said David Jenkins, a leading Biblical scholar. "That means that McCain wants to control Babylon for at least a century." According to many scholars of the Book of Revelation, the Antichrist will try to rebuild the ancient city of Babylon in order to use it as a springboard for an international effort at world domination. Ultimately, the Antichrist will marshal forces from Babylon to spark a showdown with Christian and Jewish-led forces in the battle of Armageddon.

"We believe that the End Times is near, based on the pattern of wars, earthquakes. and other strange phenomena we've been witnessing since the start of the New Millennium," said Jenkins. "Given that it may be imminent, the person who controls Babylon must be the Antichrist." Until 2003, many Christians believed that Saddam Hussein might be the Antichrist, since he started excavations to restore Babylon in the mid 1970s. But Hussein's death meant that the Antichrist is someone else. Since Obama wants to get out of Iraq, he can't be the Antichrist either, concluded Jenkins.

Jenkins said his teams suspicions were further heightened when genealogical research showed that McCain's great-grandfather was actually not John McCain, but John Mihai. Mihai is an ancient Romanian name, and according to Bible-believing Christians, the Antichrist is likely to be a Romanian. "What clinched it for us was that the name Mihai means 'who is like the Lord,'" said Jenkins. "As far as we're concerned, that was enough. It means that McCain might easily pretend to be the Redeemer."

McCain's geniality and folksiness are consistent with his being the Antichrist, Jenkins said. "Many people think that the Antichrist will be a evil-seeming leader, but in fact the Bible tells us that he will be charming."

So far the McCain campaign has refused to comment on Jenkins' study.

John McCain - Antichrist (?)

Being deeply devout and American, I hold two truths to be self-evident - that the End of Times are upon us, and that Jesus is American.

It is with this in mind that I hereby unveil a Truth that will shock and amaze you - John Sidney McCain is the Antichrist.

I do not make this claim without evidence, mind you. After literally minutes of research, I have found that there can be no denying - John McCain is Satan Incarnate. Here are some vital facts:

Seven Deadly Sins

While there has always been mystery surrounding what form the Antichrist will take when it comes to Earth, there is one thing that is assured - that the Antichrist will be a Sinner of world-class standing. By looking at the Seven Deadly Sins, it is easy to see that McCain has taken sinning to an unholy level:

Lust: John Sidney McCain is guilty of Lust. He is an adulterer, very likely several times over.

Gluttony: John Sidney McCain is guilty of Gluttony. From his seemingly endless barbecues to being presented with donuts by Associated Press Political Reporters Liz Sidoti and Ron Fournier to gorging on German sausage, McCain's lust for food is legendary. And in other areas - such as his sudden desire to drill for oil anywhere and everywhere - McCain continually has shown that he can never get too much of things he likes.

Greed: John Sidney McCain is guilty of Greed. McCain and wife Cindy are worth as much as $100 million, own 10 homes, and favor expensive Italian shoes. McCain's home in Arizona comes with its own man-made lake.

Sloth: John Sidney McCain is guilty of Sloth. As a Senator from Arizona in the 110th Congress, McCain missed 64 percent of the votes. He has now missed 42 consecutive Senate votes on a wide range of subjects.

Wrath: John Sidney McCain is guilty of Wrath. His deep inner Wrath is well-documented and many colleagues deem him far too Wrathful to be trusted with the U.S. Presidency. Even McCain's famous "I lived at the Hanoi Hilton longer than anywhere else" comment came from his Wrath, as he admitted afterward: "I was just mad and had taken a swing."

Envy: John Sidney McCain is guilty of Envy. Since the 2000 U.S. Presidential Election, McCain has been blatantly obvious with his envy, first with George W. Bush, then to Mitt Romney and now Barack Obama. When you have something McCain wants, he has shown he will do or say anything to try and even the score.

Pride: John Sidney McCain is guilty of Pride. The next time McCain stops talking about his experiences being a POW will be the first since Nov. 2006. A recent scientific study has conclusively proven that McCain is 200 percent more ignorant than Barack Obama, and proud of it.

Signs of the Antichrist

This individual, known as Antichrist in the Bible, will be a sinister world leader that shows up during the End Times. He reigns terror for three and one half years. He will be the leader of a ten unit empire. He will be powerful and is even able to perform miracles. His powers will come from satan. He and his sidekick, the false prophet, will deceive the world. These two will cause everyone in the world to take a mark in their right hand or in their head. Nobody can buy or sell anything without this mark. They will also create an image and all must worship it ... Or die. The number one mission of Antichrist is to get the entire world to worship him as their lord. If they choose not to, they will be killed. It will truly be HELL on earth.

-- Serious Theologist.

The above text is the final proof that John Sidney McCain is the Antichrist. Note that the Antichristwill only reign for three and a half years. McCain has already let out hints that he will only be a one-term President. Other connections:

"He and his sidekick, the false prophet, will deceive the world."

Karl Rove
is running McCain's campaign. Enough said.

"These two will cause everyone in the world to take a mark in their right hand or in their head."

McCain has long been willing to stick RFID chips into everything and everybody.

John McCain - Antichrist

In the end, there is but one conclusion - John McCain is the Antichrist and End Times are imminent. The World is one U.S. Presidential election away from seeing the Book of Revelations become a reality show.

Scoff at this well-researched theory you will, but just remember, it makes exactly the same amount of sense as the theory held by many Republicans that Obama is the Antichrist.

John McCain Portraying Barack Obama as the Anti-Christ?

Obama portrayed as 'the One' by McCain camp
http://www.youtube.com/v/mopkn0lPzM8&hl=en&fs=1

It's become so common for politicians to attack each other's histories and character that such behavior doesn't attract any real attention anymore.

John McCain is taking this one giant leap further, though, by running an television advertisement which is quite blatant in connecting Barack Obama with the Anti-Christ. It's both a new low in negative politics and in using religion to pander for votes, which tells us something about the real John McCain.

http://www.youtube.com/v/mopkn0lPzM8&hl=en&fs=1

McCain doesn't quite come out and say that Obama is the Anti-Christ, but the same would be true if the ad said that Obama had the number 666 tattooed on his butt. I don't think anyone would try to split hairs on what the real message of such a claim would be and the meaning of the actual advertisement is no less blatant. It's called "dog whistle" politics because it uses loaded language that "calls" to people who know the codes while remaining under the radar to those who don't (or at least while creating "plausible deniability" so the creators can avoid taking responsibility for their actions).

Historically such unethical tactics have been found primarily in Republican ads promoting and pandering to racism, a pedigree which tells us even more about who John McCain really is.

As the ad begins, the words "It should be known that in 2008 the world shall be blessed. They will call him The One" flash across the screen. The Antichrist of the Left Behind books is a charismatic young political leader named Nicolae Carpathia who founds the One World religion (slogan: "We Are God") and promises to heal the world after a time of deep division. One of several Obama clips in the ad features the Senator saying, "A nation healed, a world repaired. We are the ones that we've been waiting for."

Source: Time
Democrats are objecting, of course, but some of those objecting — like Mara Vanderslice and Amy Sullivan, the author of this Time article — are among those who have kept arguing that Democratic candidates need to incorporate more and more religion into their political pandering. They may not agree with portraying an opponent as the Anti-Christ, but when you agree that it's appropriate to frame secular, civil policies or elections in religious terms, then you've already opened wide the door to such behavior.

When you agree that it's acceptable for candidates for civil government offices proclaim themselves as doing God's work and/or as called by God — which Bush has done in the past and Obama is doing now — then portraying opponents as anti-God is inevitable. As bad as McCain's behavior is, then, it's simply a further and predictable progression of the sort of religious politics and religious nationalism which Republicans have relied on for decades and which some want Democrats to emulate.

To put it in terms and Vanderslice and Sullivan should be able to understand and appreciate: you can't appropriate the tools of Satan without ending up doing Satan's work; God's work can only be done by using God's tools and not with the tools of His enemy.

[Democratic consultant Eric] Sapp knows that the phrasing and images could just be dismissed as a peculiar coincidence. After all, it was Oprah Winfrey who told an Iowa crowd that Obama was "the one!" But, he insists, "the frequency of these images and references don't make any sense unless you're trying to send the message that Obama could be the Antichrist." Mara Vanderslice, another Democratic consultant, who handled religious outreach for the 2004 Kerry campaign, agrees. "If they wanted to be funny, if they really wanted to play up the idea that Obama thinks he's the Second Coming, there were better ways to do it," she says. "Why use these awkward lines like, 'And the world will receive his blessings'?"
Although the popularity of the noxious Left Behind novels allowed McCain to easily portray Obama as the Anti-Christ, he's helped significantly by the fact that there is a passionate cadre of Christian extremists who already and sincerely believe that Obama is the Anti-Christ.

In the Left Behind books, Carpathia is a junior Senator who speaks several languages, is beloved by people around the world and fawned over by a press corps that cannot see his evil nature, and rises to absurd prominence after delivering just one major speech. Hmmh. But serious Antichrist theorists don't stop there. Everything from Obama's left-handedness to his positive rhetoric to his appearance on the cover of this magazine has been cited as evidence of his true identity. One chain e-mail claims that the Antichrist was prophesied to be "A man in his 40s of MUSLIM descent," which would indeed sound ominous if not for the fact that the Book of Revelation was written at least 400 years before the birth of Islam.

The speculation reached a fever pitch after Obama's European trip and the Berlin speech in which he called for global unity. Conservative Christian author Hal Lindsey declared in an essay on WorldNetDaily, "Obama is correct in saying that the world is ready for someone like him — a messiah-like figure, charismatic and glib ... The Bible calls that leader the Antichrist. And it seems apparent that the world is now ready to make his acquaintance." The conservative website RedState.com now sells mugs and T shirts that sport a large "O" with horns and the words "The Anti-Christ" underneath.
People like this are beyond help or reason, but they also aren't unusual in the history of Christianity. There is too much similarity between them and Christians of the past who spread or believed other rumors, like that Jews used the blood of Christian children to make unleavened bread. Both are cases of treating others as the epitome of evil not on the basis of facts and evidence, but simply to encourage hatred of them or even to feel superior about oneself.

These are the same sorts of Christians who today spread falsehoods about atheists, Muslims, pagans, humanists, and other non-Christians — and always falsehoods which are clearly designed to encourage distrust of or animosity towards the targeted group. Of course, when a person's entire worldview is faith-based and they are repeatedly indoctrinated into preferring faith over evidence, science, and reason, problems like this can't be surprising. Is believing that Barack Obama is the Anti-Christ really any more unreasonable or absurd than believing an Anti-Christ or a Christ can exist at all in the first place?

I'm not talking about the potential political consequences (the former is certainly worse), but just about the reasonableness of the belief itself. The fact that the latter ideas are more popular and even held by many who are generally nice and decent doesn't have any impact on the reasonableness of the ideas in question. (Un)reasonableness is something established independent of an idea's popularity, the sanity of those who hold it, the niceness of those who hold it, etc.

Unfortunately, the aforementioned political impact of McCain's ad won't be limited to just the deluded believers who already believe Obama is the Anti-Christ and/or that the Left Behind novels are non-fiction. These sorts of ideas can slip into the unconscious of voters whose religion has already primed them to believe such nonsense on some level and thus cause them to adopt a more negative, unforgiving perspective on Obama without their ever consciously and seriously believing he is the Anti-Christ. They don't need to believe this; they just need to shift to a more negative attitude.

The same is true of Republican dog whistle ads on racism: they don't just appeal to open racists, but also affect those who are unconsciously prejudiced and who can be brought to adopt a more negative attitude towards a candidate by associating them with negative racial stereotypes. The best way to defeat this is to undermine the non-conscious ideologies of racism and White Supremacism. The best way to defeat McCain's tactic is to end belief in religious nonsense.

Neither is likely to happen any time soon.

THE SEVEN THUNDERS

Well, it looks like this theory fails the “666” critical test of the “number of a name” for the Antichrist. So these “Christians” are apparently grasping for straw in their quest to force-fit McCain into the role of the Antichrist. Absolutely no combination of McCain’s name, even in combination with the title of “President” produces “666”. In fact, the contrary results are produced demonstrating a man destined for governmental leadership and having great favor from God.

John McCain = 540 (9: number of finality & conclusion)

John Sidney McCain III = 1161 (9: number of finality & conclusion)

John Sidney McCain = 1158 (15: number of Divine Grace)

John S. McCain III = 657 (18: number of Yahweh)

John S. McCain = 654 (15: number of Divine Grace)

J. S. McCain = 432 (9: number of finality & conclusion)

J. S. McCain III = 435 (12: number of governmental perfection)

J. Sidney McCain = 774 (18: number of Yahweh)

President J. S. McCain = 1092 (12: number of governmental perfection)

President John McCain = 1200 (12: number of governmental perfection)

President McCain = 918 (18: number of Yahweh)

President John Sidney McCain = 1656 (18: number of Yahweh)

President John Sidney McCain III = 1659 (21: number of spiritual perfection magnified)

President McCain III = 921 (12: number of governmental perfection)

J. McCain = 318 (12: number of governmental perfection)

J. McCain III = 321 (6: number of man)

Sidney McCain = 714 (12: number of governmental perfection)

Sidney McCain III = 717 (15: number of Divine Grace)

President J. McCain = 978 (24: number of Divine Governmental Perfection)

President J. McCain III = 981 (18: number of Yahweh)

Even if the Biblical vernacular for a “President” is used, being a “King”, it still does not produce the number “666”. Below are the McCain name combinations using this approach in an attempt to produce a number closest to 666, but to no avail.

King John McCain = 786

King J. S. McCain = 678

King J. McCain = 564

King S. McCain = 618

King McCain = 504

Whereas, when this principle is applied to Obama in the following form, the number “666” is emphatically produced:

King B. H. Obama, Jr. = 666

All these name combinations can be checked on the following English Gematria Calculator Hexa-Code System:

The human "little" horn of the scriptures will rise in the Middle East, not outside of it, and 10 other Middle Eastern kings will be associated with him. He will rise up among them. The current ID's being suggested are bogus. This individual entity has not appeared on the stage yet, but when he does there will be no question about his identity. He is called the "Assyrian" in scripture and his god is Gog (Satan). They had proved that Ronald Reagan was the antichrist. But he died. So they are bored and want another antichrist- hence: John McCain.

Checklist of Omens

pointing to:
Ronald Wilson Reagan
as the Anti-Christ.

If you take the letters R and E from red and add them to the letters A G O and N from dragon you have a possible spelling for Reagan. Red Dragon is a Biblical name for the Anti-Christ. (Rev 12:3)

The names Ronald Wilson and Reagan each have six letters. (Rev 13:18)

Reagan's house number was 666 before Nancy had it changed to 668.

Reagan was shot and wounded and recovered from the wound. (Rev 13:3).

On election day of 1980, 666 was the winning lottery number in both New Jersey and Maryland.

In 1984 on the Saturday after his re-election 666 was again the winning lottery number in Maryland. It was sold out making it the number with the most winners until that point in time.

In his first speech as President Reagan mentioned the number 666 as the cost in dollars that was added to new cars by government regulations.

Reagan's first budget predicted 666 billion dollars in government revenues.

Reagan's re-election campaign cost 66.6 million dollars.

Reagan's first primary victory in the California Governors race came in 6/66

July 6, 1999 California votes to produce Reagan license plates in a 66 to 6 vote.

Reagan's first film was the 666th film released by Hollywood.

His adopted son was rumored to have been born on a 6/6 at 6 am.

In the film "Knute Rockne All American" he played one of The Four Horsemen. (Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?)

One anagram for Ronald Wilson Reagan is "Insane Anglo Warlord."

Another anagram for Ronald Wilson Reagan is "I ran old war on Angels."

The probability of all these things happening to a man who is not the antichrist is almost nil.

Hey let's add to the insanity being discussed. Mother Theresa is the anti-christ. Oh wait, she's dead. Dick Cheney, ya, Cheney ya, he's the anti-christ.

Unless you have a candidate for the roll who comes out of a "revived ROMAN empire" please stop these ludicrous posts.

Problem is that so many people believe this sort of sensational news and so much of this is bs. Do people turn to the tabloids as a starting point for research? This sort of news can ruin reputations and it is not fair. Almost all the pieces are in place for the last days and it is doubtful that McCain will have a starring role in satans army. In fact, McCain might be a private in the Lords army, ready to do battle for our God. And McCain's past record shows us that he is no coward.

I know what you mean. No amount of number shuffling, flipping, splicing, arranging, etc. can make McCain the 666-Antichrist as I have clearly proven.

LOL! Elvis! laugh.gif

Actually God gives us a glimpse of the anti christ in scriptures and it is God that teaches us what qualities and characteristics to look at for in the anti-christ. So I think its a fair statement to say; McCain can't be the anti-christ because the Holy Spirit clearly proves this to be an impossibility.

McCain as Jesus / Obama as Moses and the AntiChrist

This article reviews how the Republicans have used Jesus imagery to support John McCain, while associating Barack Obama with Moses (superseded Old Testament law giver), and the AntiChrist.

Part 1 - The Passion of John McCain

Our exploration begins with an invitation to see McCain's experience as a POW as being related to a crucifixion experience: http://www.youtube.com/...

http://www.youtube.com/v/7WTu7drLfRc&hl=en&fs=1

This, like the corresponding anti-Obama religious frames, are important because they were among the early hits, designed to frame the election before people focused on a conscious level and before they would be drowned out in the noise.

(By the way, there is some evidence that it was the practice of Vietnamese prison guards to draw X's in the dirt to designate a prisoner for special treatment.... so there may have been a little miscommunication here... but never mind. Also, there is a LONG literary history of "crosses in the dirt" drawn for a prisoner by a guard in shared Christian solidarity. Alexander Solzhenitsyn in fact described a guard doing just that for him, from which this event may be plagiarized, particularly given that McCain has even written articles about Solzhenitsyn and is a great admirer of him... but I think we discussed that earlier.) None of this matters a wit: we are operating in the realm of mythological truths here and we are meant to understand something very specifically Christian about McCain and his POW experience.)

Then here Fred Thompson (like many others) uses what some have called the Passion of Christ strategy, lovingly drawing out the description of each specific inflicted pain and each agonizing suffering. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

"The guards cracked ribs, broke teeth off at the gums. They cinched a rope around his arms and painfully drew his shoulders back. Over four days, every two to three hours, the beatings resumed. During one especially fierce beating, he fell, again breaking his arm. John was beaten for communicating with other prisoners. He was beaten for NOT communicating with so-called "peace delegations." He was beaten for not giving information during interrogations. When his captors wanted the names of other pilots in his squadron, John gave them the names of the offensive line of the Green Bay Packers."

And it's not just John and Fred: The head of the Georgia Republican party flat out said it down in Georgia where the faithful would hear, and few others would likely notice:
http://www.ajc.com/...

Georgia Republican Party chairwoman Sue Everhart said Saturday that the party's presumed presidential nominee has a lot in common with Jesus Christ. "John McCain is kind of like Jesus Christ on the cross," Everhart said as she began the second day of the state GOP convention. "He never denounced God, either." Everhart was praising McCain for never denouncing the United States while he was being tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. "I'm not trying to compare John McCain to Jesus Christ, I'm looking at the pain that was there," she said.

Finally, the POW experience is invoked repeatedly to justify EVERYTHING.... much as Jesus' suffering redeems everything. As a result John McCain can't even LIE because he was a POW.

"Nicolle Wallace, a spokeswoman for Mr. McCain, said on Sunday night that Mr. McCain had not heard the broadcast of the event while in his motorcade and heard none of the questions. "The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous," Ms. Wallace said." (New York Times)

Now Who else (besides McCain) is, by dint of suffering, incapable of uttering a falsehood?

Part 2 Obama: AntiChrist or False Prophet - You Decide

Now we introduce Obama as a presumptuous Old Testament prophet (who naturally must be superseded by the true prophet)

Here's the first hit: http://www.youtube.com/...

http://www.youtube.com/v/Id1IKJGVkvg&hl=en&fs=1

Here's the second: http://www.youtube.com/...
http://www.youtube.com/v/ls05NfUAiNk&hl=en&fs=1

Others (who?) pick up on the "Old Testament" prophet theme: http://www.youtube.com/... and have even more fun, but the fun seems to me is as much mockery of Obama as it is mockery of the propaganda.

http://www.youtube.com/v/i55OAvpl9IA&hl=en&fs=1

Part 2a Side note - Whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you!

Obama's friends can claim he is Jesus too, of course, but how can anyone believe that with these lousy production values: http://www.youtube.com/...

I mean if he was the Prince of Peace wouldn't he at least hire a decent ad agency?

http://www.youtube.com/v/bpNQRp2R9Oo&hl=en&fs=1

Part 3 - Crazy Time

As a last step, having successfully established (1) McCain's Christ like credentials, and (2) Obama's weird old testament-y presumptuous "false savior" / AntiChrist / Muslim arrogance (which no matter how many times the movie plays always collapses when Jesus shows up), we move on to the logical conclusions, so well illustrated in this minidocumentary on Palin's crazy Third Wave church:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

http://www.youtube.com/v/5K_1Eit0pxM&hl=en&fs=1

Holy ---. If you watch nothing else here, take a moment with that one! Whatever those people are up to, they are gonna LOVE this Jesus McCain stuff, don't you think? And all their friends and cousins?

Part 4 - OK, Let's Get Serious

Finally because nothing is true until major capitalist institutions validate it, the Wall Street Journal pages observes what I have described here too.
http://blogs.wsj.com/...

My guess is that the McCain camp viewed the ad as a three-fer: some viewers would view it as a playful poke at Sen. Obama's ego, showing Sen. McCain to have a sense of humor and Sen. Obama to be too full of himself. Other, more religious voters, would be downright offended by Obama's Messianic complex, since, antichrist aside, it's offensive for anyone to think he's God-like. And still other voters would view it as validation or reinforcement of the messages they've heard elsewhere that Obama is the antichrist.

Time Magazine confirms this analysis with a somewhat less readable analysis:
http://www.time.com/...

Conclusion

So that's all. This race is all about tapping into the religious archetypes that animate the American street, assigning people to their proper roles in the never ending passion play that is American politics (Christ versus AntiChrist, Christians versus Jews, JudeoChristians versus Muslims, New Testament versus Old Testament, Believers versus Unbelievers) and getting people to vote their God.

Much of this framing took place several months and weeks ago. It is less visible now because it has already been implanted in the minds of voters and constitutes a lens through which they view current statements and events.

These images were the OPENING shots in the battle because they needed to shape the field for the subsequent back and forth which would be much cloudier and less well defined. They are designed to be what voters go back to as they weary of the shouting and the claims and counter claims.

Lots of my secular friends find it implausible that all of this could matter very much. I disagree. I think that the future of health care, imperialism and global warming all hang on the question of who is Jesus and who is Moses, who is Christ and who is AntiChrist.

THE SEVEN THUNDERS

This is an attempt at psychological archetypical analysis of the Hero vs. Adversary applied to the political genre and seen through the modern lens of antipodal opposite mindsets.

It has nothing to do with actual and genuine personhoods prophesied, which is another story.

Jesus 2008, Part II: John McCain's God

This is the second posting in a series that will look at each of the major presidential candidates in light of their personal relationship with Jesus. Please continue to check back for additional posts in this series.

Previously, I talked about the sad spectacle of John McCain pandering to the religious right by disavowing all the credit he once gave to his fellow POWs for keeping him alive in Vietnam, to instead credit God for his survival.

But there is another interpretation, one that speaks better of his integrity, but at the same time suggests that the God John McCain believes in...might not be the one he's supposed to believe in.

Here's the video, from McCain's website, of him talking about his faith. Not, it's worth noting, talking about God or Jesus, but talking about his faith.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stbeKJEkpTM...ccains-god.html

"My faith has been my salvation. ... My faith has been my anchor and my guide... The reason, the only reason why I'm here today is because I believe that a higher being has a mission for me in my life, a reason for me to be here. Now, that doesn't mean that he wants me to be elected or not, but it does mean that I have a purpose. And that purpose, I think, is to live a life based on Judeo-Christian principles and honor and integrity."
George W. Bush hired a speechwriter to ensure that his public remarks evoked the same God, the same Jesus, that the conservative base believes in: A personal, anthropomorphic God who has preferences when it comes to presidential elections, Grammy results and the Super Bowl.

McCain's mistake here is to reveal that he does not believe in this God.

McCain, it is clear, either believes in the progressive, non-literalist left's notion of God, or he believes in the not-really-God that many on the left call God--the god who's just love or fate or an energy that binds us or some other similar nonsense--or McCain is simply lying and doesn't believe in God at all.

After all, it's not God or Jesus who saved McCain, he says. It's faith. In other words, it wasn't the intervention of an external force that saved him, it was an internal phenomenon that saved him: His own mental stance, faith.

And McCain clearly does not envision a God of personal preferences.

McCain could have said he does not know whether God wants him to be elected.

But he didn't. He said he's not claiming that God has a desire one way or another.

And look at the mission McCain's God has for him--to live a life based on Judeo-Christian values.

It's the language of a non-religious person trying to fake religiosity.

A Jewish God, after all, would want McCain to base his life on Jewish values; a Christian God on Christian values.

There's no conceivable God that could want believers to base their lives based on the values of two separate religions.

A true believer--in any religion--would have used language that avoided choosing one sect over another. McCain made the mistake of combining them, which no sect's God would ever do.

Furthermore, unlike George W. Bush--whose mother told him the pastor was "talking to you" in talking about God's desire that Americans find a leader--John McCain says the only mission he thinks God has in mind for him is the same one God would have for anyone: Live by good values, don't be a jerk.

The God of the religious right has specific missions for each and every person. Preach the gospel, win American Idol, whatever. McCain doesn't get that.

We don't know whether McCain lost faith and found reason in Vietnam. But in his book, "Faith of My Fathers," McCain makes clear that the driving faith in his life has been the faith in country, honor and integrity instilled in him by his military family.

His salvation was not Jesus, God or even religious faith. It was the cellmates who kept him going and told him dirty jokes.

It's possible that McCain believes in some sort of magical entity that might qualify as "God."

But if he does, it's clear from his own language that this god is the same god that much of the left believes in.

But it is most assuredly not the hurricane-causing, miracle-granting, prayer-listening-to, president-rooting-for, political-policy-having god of the religious right.

addendum:

Here at christian-forum.net , the believers are all pretty quick to analyze the faith of others with zealousness. Granted, there really is a plurality of opinion here and that is also the hallmark of free speech, which is what makes this forum, one of the best.
So, apply that same scrutiny to the statements made above by this candidate, and you will have to come to the conclusion that, by a truly born again Christian (without judging) and measured against the Word of God and salvation via the blood of Jesus, is he truly ... saved? The same criterion of course applies to Obama. In that case, regardless of who wins, the United States and the World are both ripe for ...
the Great Tribulation.

I agree with you here that the world is ripe for the trib.

But we still should pray. I really hope you don't agree with who Obama has been hanging out with Voice. One of the ones he has ties to (can't think of the name at the moment) really hates the Jewish people.

Don't you think that God wants us to ask Him for the kind of leaders that we want? He does.

The more I read this forum the more convinced I become that Christians have taken Christianity to a new low. Titus 2:1 ought to benefit. If only....

Does anyone not have a modicum of discernment in this generation? The very title of this post is a sure fire indication that they do not. To follow up with replies upon replies to such virtual strip tease theology is to join with dissent rather than to occupy till He comes. Even the Mccain pic that turns and turns until a demonic looking entity takes the stead. Antichrist is satan driven but he is still a man. Not a demon. He would not present as such. And I would shake hands with Mccain, a war vetern and a hero of the USA.

Thank you Larry for that comment toward a man that I pray will be our next President.

He knows what will make the economy of the United States grow.

If he becomes our next President....believers will know that it was truely God that did this.

I just pray God is wanting to bless us and give us a chance to do better.

There are too many weak minded individuals that love the clammering sound of Obamas chant of "change".

What they don't know is that his policies will not help our nation...but only serve to keep us from coming out of the trouble we are in.

Lieberman: Palin Will Win "With God's Help"

Via CNN streaming video, I watched Sarah Palin's event in Clearwater, Florida, this morning. She was heartily introduced there by John McCain's pal Joe Lieberman. The former Democrat is a very strange figure these days, far from his moorings in the Democratic Party. But you can see how his personal friendship with McCain, and his genuine support for the Iraq war, might cause him to help out his buddy on the stump.

It was jarring, however, to hear Lieberman's full-throated endorsement of Sarah Palin, a woman with whom he has no prior relationship, and whose policy credentials you have to think the wonky 20-year Senator would find suspect in any other context.

"She's so strong, she's so capable, she's so competent," Lieberman told the cheering crowd. Emphasizing her "faith," he added that she is someone who "with your help--and God's help--will be the next vice president of the United States." More big cheers.

The religiousity continued when Palin bounded onstage. She commented right away on the number of American flags in the crowd, declaring: "God bless America--you guys get it!"

And then it was on with the attacks on Obama: "There are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are some candidates, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change," Palin said. She went on to reiterate charges that Obama is friendly with terrorists (Bill Ayers), wants America to lose in Iraq, and smears US troops in Afghanistan.

More: For this heavily churchgoing GOP crowd, Palin is showing a side we haven't seen in her TV interviews and at the debate. Mentioning the potential for wind and solar power in Florida she exclaims: "God has so richly blessed you here!" Between her and Lieberman, that makes four references to faith and God in about five minutes.

P.S. Now playing after her speech: Shania Twain's "She's Not Just a Pretty Face."

I'm so #@&^%* tired of these Maureen Dowd lines. "There are some people who run for office because they are ambitious, grasping, power-mad, self-important martinets. And then there are ...".

Oh, why bother.

Any way, latest doo-doo-on-the-doorstep by the Palin:

"At a rally on Saturday in California, Sarah Palin offered up a rather jarring argument for supporting the Republican ticket. "There's a place in Hell reserved for women who don't support other women," the Alaska Governor said, claiming she was quoting former Clinton Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

The statement came after Palin had recounted a "providential" moment she experienced on Saturday: "I'm reading on my Starbucks mocha cup, okay? The quote of the day... It was Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State [crowd boos] and UN ambassador. ... Now she said it, I didn't. She said, 'There's a place in Hell reserved for women who don't support other women.'"

So Ms. Average Joe-Six-Pack-Molly-Blue-Eye-Shadow-Cindy-Pregnant-Teenage-Daughter-Jack-Drug-Dealing-Son drinks Starbuck Mocha, does she? Where are the Repug trolls and trollgorithms to denounce this elitist wanna-be? Or is it that Starbucks is only elitist if Democrat drink it?

You hear that? She's not just strong, capable, and competent. She's SO each one of those.

I think Leebs -- as his staff calls him behind his back -- senses that Democrats will pick up 5-8 seats in the upper chamber this fall and figures he might as well go all out if he's going to lose that committtee chairmanship.

I guess all that eye winking and flirting isnt helping her cause any she has taken to threatening: If women dont support me there will be a special place in hell for them.

Doesnt it just warm your hear that this person could be our next leader. I cant tell you how much it keeps me up at night with excitement. Maybe after she is elected we can have a witch hunt right here in Amercia over 4 centuries later. On Nov. 5th, I want to ask Lieberman about what God thinks when Obama wins the election. Was it really God's will, then, that Obama won? Are you going to use that information when you make decisions from now on?

Leebs does realize that Sarah Palin believes that God will punish him with an eternity in hell just for being Jewish, right?

And while we're on the topic of God's will, at least Hosea's wife earned money when she prostituted herself. Lieberman seems to be doing it for free. To what end? Is there a cabinet post in it for him if McCain wins, and if so, which one? Or is ambassador to Israel enough for him to sell his soul like this?

Some Serious Out-of-Whackness Going On

By Roy Murtishaw

After nearly eight years of the Bushevik's witless madness, we've progressed from idiocy overload to outrage burnout. However, the latest " lies are the new truths " outrages have merely escalated since the McCain-Palin reptiles have taken the field.

A review of John McCain's life, political career, personality, and character reveal remarkable similarities to George W. Bush. Both men are the sons and grandsons of distinguished men; McCain's father and grandfather were both 4 star admirals and Bush's father was a POTUS, his grandfather a United States Senator from Connecticut. Both Bush and McCain were largely undistinguished until mid-life and their late life success has been mostly bought, manufactured and fraudulent. In fact, an unbiased review of both Bush and McCain strongly indicates the most authentic characteristic of both men is how thoroughly inauthentic they are in matters of character, intellect and judgment. John McCain was called John McNasty during his prep school days and despite his marginal record, his family connections secured him a place in the United States Naval Academy and, as is true of Bush in never being accountable, he continued his "McNasty" behavior both on the campus and in the classroom. Not surprisingly, McCain managed to graduate 894th out of 899 in his class. Despite his dismal record, again Mccain suffered no normal consequences, and was able to leap frog over countless new midshipmen being accepted as a prospective Naval Aviator. As a result, John McCain " lost " 5 jets during his aviation career and even reportedly was involved in a tragic fire resulting in the deaths of 134 and severe injuries to another 161 sailors on the deck of the USS Forrestal in 1967 when his "wetstarting" hotdogging of his plane caused a chain reaction of explosions and firestorms on the deck. McCain was spirited off the plane by helicopter to spare him the murderous rage of his fellow sailors. Somehow (Daddy, John Sidney McCain II? ), John SidneyMcCain III was able to exit the war as an acclaimed hero and has subsequently milked his suspect war record to enjoy a 26 year carreer as a star in the Republican Party. McCain has fashioned his political career from his phony fabric of "straight talking," "family values," and eschewing big money influence. His actions, though, actually totally shred the fabric, leaving only worthless threads. When he returned to his courageous first wife who had been gravely injured and disfigured in an automobile accident and had kept this from her husband so as to not add to his already significant burdens, she was greeted by McCain's contempt which fueled his compulsive womanizing until McCain met Cindy Hensley, a woman of striking beauty and incredible wealth and 18 years his junior. The married McCain thus began a worldwide courtship and married Cindy just weeks after his divorce from Carol. Cindy and her family wealth soon financed McCain's political career, not to mention his enormous gambling debts, in his newly adopted state of Arizona. While carefully creating a high-minded persona, the real McCain has been a fervent advocate for the moneyed elite, awol on children's issues, remarkably light in supporting veterans issues.and such a champion of flip-flopping he now disavows bills he himself sponsored and that bear his name. McCain's demonstrated extraordinary lack of intellect, character, judgment and consistency was never more clearly displayed than with his selection of Sara Palin as his running mate. Sara Palin is anti-choice in all instances except the life of the mother, anti-sex education, anti-evolution, anti-global warming. She is, however, pro-wolf slaughter from airplanes, pro-Council for National Policy right wing extremism, pro-literal biblical interpretation, pro- Newt Gingrich's GOPAC training where she was graduated with honors, pro-abstinence only sex education despite her 17-year-old daughter's unwed pregnancy, pro-abuse of elected authority, pro-compulsive lying and pro-perpetual war. She is so abominably unqualified for the office of the presidency or vice-presidency, her selection decidedly confirms McCain's own abominably demented decision-making. Despite the frightening formation of the McCain/Palin team, many of our corporatist MSM spokemen such as Tom Brokaw, Bob Shiefer, David Gregory, Fox News, Right Wing Radio, etc. continue to spin their candidacy as favorably as possible. Conversely, the Obama/Biden ticket is spun as negatively as neccessary to insure some degree of competiveness for ratings/ad revenue purposes and to hopefully prevent any chance the corporatist-globalist-dominionist-neo con cabal will not be challenged. All the above having been said, the events in store leading up to the November elections should be a cacophony of out-of-whackness. Fargo Police Chief, Marge Gunderson's evil twin--a.k.a.Sara Palin--has been officially designated the McCain mob's muscle and has already begun her campaign of lobbing smears. Pat Buchanan now acts as head cheerleader of her chants tying Obama to terrorists, wacky preachers, elitism, charmlessness, corruption. All this coming from a woman who is married to an Alaska secessionist, who's own preacher frequently employs a Kenyan witch doctor to cast out demons which might impede Sara's political ambitions, who openly embraces the "end times" and the joys of the impending rapture. From a woman whose political gurus include indicted U.S. senators, Newt Gingrich, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, who gets her political quotes off of Star Bucks mocha cups while being unable to name a single newspaper she reads even though she reportedly received a BA degree in journalism after attending six colleges in six years. McCain meanwhile has chosen to echo Palin's mud slinging in hopes of "generating doubts" about his opponent with the strange name, strange childhood stays in places like Indonesia and .....Hawaii, strange religious beliefs arising from a church called the United Church of Christ--which might be a clever trick to hide Obama's godless Muslim exposure when he briefly attended elementary schools accepting muslim children and most especially his strange genetic ties to the "dark " continent of Africa. Meanwhile back at the McCain ranch in Arizona, McCain is emphasizing his ordinariness (if you don't count his own constant reminders he is a war hero, he is a POW survivor) and, save a few Keatingesque slips, he has been a crusader for justice, the American Way and apple pie in the United States Senate for decades.

His dearth of strangeness also discounts the facts he has 9 additional homes, he owns 13 cars and a private jet, his wife has an inherited beer fortune of over $100 million, he wears $550 dollar loafers, he recently spent $5500 to be made up for a TV appearance, and he is able to win or lose tens of thousands of IRS unreported dollars at casino crap tables without fear.

Yep. You betcha, John and Sara are just ordinary folks. Don't you feel better now? Enjoy tonights debate.

Mishaps mark John McCain's record as naval aviator

Three crashes early in his career led Navy officials to question or fault his judgment.

By Ralph Vartabedian and Richard A. Serrano
Los Angeles Times Staff Writers

Library of Congress This photo provided by the Library of Congress shows John McCain, front right, with his squadron in 1965.

October 6, 2008

John McCain was training in his AD-6 Skyraider on an overcast Texas morning in 1960 when he slammed into Corpus Christi Bay and sheared the skin off his plane's wings.

McCain recounted the accident decades later in his autobiography. "The engine quit while I was practicing landings," he wrote. But an investigation board at the Naval Aviation Safety Center found no evidence of engine failure.

FOR THE RECORD:
McCain's aviation record: An article in Monday's Section A about Republican presidential nominee John McCain's record as a naval aviator quoted Jeremiah Pearson and said he had been a Navy officer who flew 400 missions over Vietnam. Pearson was an officer in the Marines. —

The 23-year-old junior lieutenant wasn't paying attention and erred in using "a power setting too low to maintain level flight in a turn," investigators concluded.

The crash was one of three early in McCain's aviation career in which his flying skills and judgment were faulted or questioned by Navy officials
.

In his most serious lapse, McCain was "clowning" around in a Skyraider over southern Spain about December 1961 and flew into electrical wires, causing a blackout, according to McCain's own account as well as those of naval officers and enlistees aboard the carrier Intrepid. In another incident, in 1965, McCain crashed a T-2 trainer jet in Virginia.

After McCain was sent to Vietnam, his plane was destroyed in an explosion on the deck of an aircraft carrier in 1967. Three months later, he was shot down during a bombing mission over Hanoi and taken prisoner. He was not faulted in either of those cases and was later lauded for his heroism as a prisoner of war.

As a presidential candidate, McCain has cited his military service -- particularly his 5 1/2 years as a POW. But he has been less forthcoming about his mistakes in the cockpit.

The Times interviewed men who served with McCain and located once-confidential 1960s-era accident reports and formerly classified evaluations of his squadrons during the Vietnam War. This examination of his record revealed a pilot who early in his career was cocky, occasionally cavalier and prone to testing limits.

In today's military, a lapse in judgment that causes a crash can end a pilot's career. Though standards were looser and crashes more frequent in the 1960s, McCain's record stands out.

"Three mishaps are unusual," said Michael L. Barr, a former Air Force pilot with 137 combat missions in Vietnam and an internationally known aviation safety expert who teaches in USC's Aviation Safety and Security Program. "After the third accident, you would say: Is there a trend here in terms of his flying skills and his judgment?"

Jeremiah Pearson, a Navy officer who flew 400 missions over Vietnam without a mishap and later became the head of human spaceflight at NASA, said: "That's a lot. You don't want any. Maybe he was just unlucky."

Naval aviation experts say the three accidents before McCain's deployment to Vietnam probably triggered a review to determine whether he should be allowed to continue flying. The results of the review would have been confidential.

The Times asked McCain's campaign to release any military personnel records in the candidate's possession showing how the Navy handled the three incidents. The campaign said it would have no comment.

Navy veterans who flew with McCain called him a good pilot.

"John was what you called a push-the-envelope guy," said Sam H. Hawkins, who flew with McCain's VA-44 squadron in the 1960s and now teaches political science at Florida Atlantic University. "There are some naval aviators who are on the cautious side. They don't get out on the edges, but the edges are where you get the maximum out of yourself and out of your plane. That's where John operated. And when you are out there, you take risks."

The young McCain has often been described as undisciplined and fearless -- a characterization McCain himself fostered in his autobiography.

"In his military career, he was a risk-taker and a daredevil," said John Karaagac, a lecturer at Johns Hopkins' School of Advanced International Studies and the author of a book on McCain. "What was interesting was that he got into accidents, and it didn't rattle his nerves. He takes hits and still stands."

McCain, the son and grandson of admirals, had a privileged status in the Navy. He was invited to the captain's cabin for dinner on the maiden voyage of the Enterprise in 1962, a perk other aviators and sailors attributed to his famous name, recalled Gene Furr, an enlisted man who shared an office and went on carrier deployments with McCain over three years.

On another occasion, McCain was selected to make a commemorative landing on the Enterprise and had his picture taken in front of a cake in the officers' galley, Furr said.

McCain's commanders sarcastically dubbed him "Ace McCain" because of his string of pre-Vietnam accidents, recalled Maurice Rishel, who commanded McCain's VA-65 squadron in early 1961, when it was deployed in the Mediterranean. Still, Rishel said, "he did his job."

Here is a closer look at those three incidents:

Corpus Christi, Texas, March 12, 1960

McCain was practicing landings in his AD-6 Skyraider over Corpus Christi Bay when he lost several hundred feet of altitude "without realizing it" and struck the water, according to the Naval Aviation Safety Center accident report on file at the Naval Historical Center in Washington.

The plane, a single-engine propeller plane designed for ground attack, sank 10 feet to the bottom of the bay. McCain swam to the surface and was plucked from the water by a rescue helicopter.

While he has contended that the engine quit, investigators collected extensive evidence indicating otherwise. Cockpit instruments that froze on impact showed the engine was still producing power. When water quenched the exhaust stack, it preserved a bright blue color, showing that the engine was still hot. And an aviator behind McCain reported that the engine was producing the black smoke characteristic of Skyraiders.

Investigators determined that McCain was watching instruments in his cockpit that indicated the position of his landing gear and had lost track of his altitude and speed.

The report concluded: "In the opinion of the board, the pilot's preoccupation in the cockpit . . . coupled with the use of a power setting too low to maintain level flight in a turn were the primary causes of this accident."

Southern Spain, around December 1961

McCain was on a training mission when he flew low and ran into electrical wires. He brought his crippled Skyraider back to the Intrepid, dragging 10 feet of wire, sailors and aviators recalled.

In his 1999 autobiography, "Faith of My Fathers," McCain briefly recounts the incident, calling it the result of "daredevil clowning" and "flying too low." McCain did not elaborate on what happened, and The Times could find no military records of the accident.

When he struck the wires, McCain severed an oil line in his plane, said Carl Russ, a pilot in McCain's squadron. McCain's flight suit and the cockpit were soaked in oil, added Russ, who nonetheless said McCain was a good pilot.

The next day, McCain went to the flight deck with his superior officers and some of the crew to inspect the damage. A gaggle of sailors surrounded the plane.

Clark Sherwood, an enlistee responsible for hanging ordnance on the squadron's planes, recalled standing on the deck with McCain. "I said, 'You're lucky to be alive.' McCain said, 'You bet your --- I am,' " Sherwood said. "He almost bought the farm." Sherwood, now a real estate agent in New Jersey, said he considered McCain a hero.

Calvin Shoemaker, a retired test pilot for the Skyraider's manufacturer, Douglas Aircraft, said extended low-level flights are difficult in any aircraft and for that reason Skyraiders were seldom flown at altitudes below 500 feet.

After hearing a description of McCain's record, Shoemaker said the aviator appeared to be a "flat-hatter," an old aviation term for a showoff.

Cape Charles, Va., Nov. 28, 1965

Over the Eastern Shore of Virginia, McCain descended below 7,000 feet on a landing approach in a T-2 trainer jet, according to accident records. He said he heard an explosion in his engine and lost power. He said he tried unsuccessfully to restart the engine.

He spotted a local drag strip and considered trying to glide to a landing there but finally had to eject at 1,000 feet. The plane crashed in the woods. McCain escaped injury and was picked up by a farmer.

In his autobiography, McCain said he had flown on a Saturday to Philadelphia to watch the annual Army-Navy football game with his parents. The accident report does not mention Philadelphia but rather indicates that McCain departed from a now-closed Navy field in New York City on Sunday afternoon and was headed to Norfolk, Va.

In a report dated Jan. 18, 1966, the Naval Aviation Safety Center said it could not determine the cause of the accident or corroborate McCain's account of an explosion in the engine. A close examination of the engine found "no discrepancies which would have caused or contributed to engine failure or malfunction."

The report found that McCain, then assigned to squadron VT-7 in Meridian, Miss., had made several errors: He failed to switch the plane's power system to battery backup, which "seriously jeopardized his survival chances." His idea of landing on the drag strip was "viewed with concern and is indicative of questionable emergency procedure."

The report added, "It may be indeed fortunate that the pilot was not in a position to attempt such a landing."

McCain also ejected too late and too low, was not wearing proper flight equipment and positioned his body improperly before ejecting, the report said.

The official record includes comments from pilots in his own squadron who defended McCain's actions as "proper and timely."

About two weeks after issuing its report, the safety center revised its findings and said the accident resulted from the failure or malfunction of an "undetermined component of the engine."

Edward M. Morrison, a mechanic for VT-7 who is now retired and living in Washington state, said that the plane McCain checked out that day had just been refurbished and that he knew of no engine problems.

"McCain came to the flight line that day, carrying his dress whites, and said, 'Give me a pretty plane,' " Morrison said. "Nobody had ever asked me for a pretty plane before. I gave him this one because it was freshly painted. The next time I saw him, I said, 'Don't ever ask me for a pretty plane again.' I think he laughed."

In Vietnam

McCain was a pilot on the carrier Forrestal, off the coast of Vietnam, when one of the worst accidents in Navy history killed 134 crew members and damaged or destroyed various aircraft, including McCain's.

On July 29, 1967, he and other pilots were preparing for a bombing raid when a Zuni rocket from one of the planes misfired.

The rocket hit the plane next to McCain's, killing the pilot, igniting jet fuel and touching off a chain of explosions, according to the Navy investigation. McCain, who jumped from the nose of his jet and ran through the flames, suffered minor shrapnel wounds.

Three months later, McCain was on his 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam when a surface-to-air missile struck his A-4 attack jet. He was flying 3,000 feet above Hanoi.

A then-secret report issued in 1967 by McCain's squadron said the aviators had learned to stay at an altitude of 4,000 to 10,000 feet in heavy surface-to-air missile environments and look for approaching missiles.

"Once the SAM was visually acquired, it was relatively easy to outmaneuver it by a diving maneuver followed by a high-G pull-up. The critical problem comes during multiple SA-II attacks (6-12 missiles), when it is not possible to see or maneuver with each missile."

The American aircraft had instruments that warned pilots with a certain tone when North Vietnamese radar tracked them and another tone when a missile locked on them.

In his autobiography, McCain said 22 missiles were fired at his squadron that day. "I knew I should roll out and fly evasive maneuvers, 'jinking,' in fliers' parlance, when I heard the tone," he wrote. But, he said, he continued on and released his bombs. Then a missile blew off his right wing.

Vietnam veterans said McCain did exactly what they did on almost every mission.

Frank Tullo, an Air Force pilot who flew 100 missions over North Vietnam, said his missile warning receiverconstantly sounded in his cockpit.

"Nobody broke off on a bombing run," said Tullo, later a commercial pilot and now an accident investigation instructor at USC. "It was a matter of manhood."

Voice,

You are doing exactly what you are accusing the McCain Supporters of doing....................spreading gossip without getting all the facts. But I guess that's okay! That is what the liberals do.....keep on digging and digging for any sort of bogus news on the opponet and than bam! You hit them where it hurts. But Voice? Thanks for trying to teach me by example of how to discredit a politcal candidate. But, I think I need to say pass on your teaching methods...I don't think Christ is at all pleased with the half-truths spoken by the Obama supporters. Oh and by the way? Were you speaking to us about gossp? Shame on You Voice. As a Christian you should know better. Voice you made our Dad unhappy with all this speculation and gossip about McCain/Palin. But what can we expect? That our left winged family members would understand the word honorable?

Voice, I think I see the whole picture. Do you also carry an ACLU card?

I will be praying for you.

Examining McCain's God and Country

T
here's no doubt John McCain is the least religious of the four major-party candidates running for president and vice president. But is there any doubt that he believes in God or Jesus Christ? Kathryn Lofton, a fellow at Princeton's Center for the Study of Religion, thinks there's reason to wonder.

In an analysis for Religion Dispatches, Lofton suggests that the higher being McCain believes in is not God or Christ. "That higher being is America," Lofton writes. "Someone once called atheism an undetectable God. McCain's God can be detected, it can be found: his God is the country for whom McCain survived."

Has John McCain deified America? Name an American politician who hasn't. Name a U.S. church that doesn't have an American flag in its sanctuary. Entire Christian denominations worship God and country. But what's important about Lofton's analysis is not whether McCain believes in God (surely he does), but what he believes about God's role in America and in his candidacy.

Lofton isn't trying to mock or dismiss McCain's religious faith. She's merely trying to understand the shortage of evidence: "John McCain calls himself Christian, yet his religious worldview (articulated in word and act) does not map anywhere near the Episcopal Church of his childhood, nor the Baptist church of his adulthood. Indeed, it is hard to find John McCain's religion without a lot of conjure, and a lot of (dangerous, on scholarly grounds) imagination."

As Lofton notes, just about every time McCain is asked to talk about his faith, he ends up talking about his country. "McCain's speeches are models of secular aridity. He doesn't just occasionally speak of God or faith or America's Christian promise; he never does." When megachurch pastor Rick Warren asked McCain what faith in Jesus meant to him, McCain replied: "Means I'm saved and forgiven. And when we're talking about the world, our faith encompasses not just the United States of America, but the world."

McCain's one and only conversion story -- the now famous story of the North Vietnamese prison guard who drew a cross in the dirt at McCain's feet one Christmas morning -- is really a story about the guard's religious faith, not McCain's. When McCain tells the story, he uses it to illustrate his faith in humanity or in duty. After one telling, McCain said: "This is my faith, the faith that unites and never divides, the faith that bridges unbridgeable gaps in humanity. That is my religious faith and it is the faith I want my party to serve, and the faith I hold in my country." When he referenced the story in his 2008 convention speech, McCain said that after Hanoi, "I wasn't my own man anymore. I was my country's . . . My country saved me. My country saved me, and I cannot forget it."

After months and months of campaigning, it's difficult to say what McCain truly believes about anything, let alone God. But if he has been consistent about anything during this campaign, it is his belief in America's Providence and his own. A
