How to Recognize the False Prophet

1 John 4:1-3 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.

There are several signs to look for when one needs to recognize the false prophet. When someone asks me what to look for, the fist thing I tell them is that you can recognize the false prophet by the gift of discerning of spirits. The gift of discerning of spirits is the ability to identify if a spirit operating in a persons' life is from the Lord or from the enemy.

We as believers have within us the spirit of truth. It is up to us to build our spiritual muscle so to speak by spending time in the word, prayer and meditation.

As with any servant of the Lord, we all have built within us the gift of discerning of spirits. You will have the yes or no answer in the pit of your stomach. There are also other signs to look for and I share them with you here.

Exalt Themselves

The false prophet will seek to exalt him or herself and make a name for themselves, other than exalting the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. The word is very clear, it says in John 12:32 "And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.

If you see that a person likes to hear his or her name mentioned, be very wary of that. They can be flamboyant in there style or dress and manner of speech. Prophets are meant to draw you closer to Jesus, not to themselves. The true prophet's desire is to see the Body of Christ come into maturity. The prophets' passion is the Body of Christ, and to see it glorious, magnificent and mature.

Does not build up or Encourage

The false prophet will not build up or encourage. God does not point fingers at us exposing our sin. The word says in Colossians 2:2-4 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. The true prophet will edifiy, uplift and encourage you. If there is sin, then the true prophet will guide you away from your sin by showing you an alternate path, not by exposing your sin.

It will be a path filled with faith, hope and love. God will give you a glimpse of a path that will cause you to turn away from your sin and follow Him.

Gift seeker

The false prophet seeks the gifts, and does not have passion for the Bride of Christ. This is a person that will seek all the anointing, all the gifts all for herself/himself. When the Lord blesses his servants with spiritual gifts, they are for the edification of the Bride of Christ and are to be poured out upon the Bride.

Speaks words contrary to your spirit

The false prophet will speak something that is contrary to your spirit. If someone comes up to you and says that God has called you as an evangelist to the Philippines, but you have no burden for the lost, much less the Philippines, then discard those types of words.

A true prophet will speak what is burning in your spirit. He will speak your desire and passion, only confirming what God has placed in your heart.I have heard of people packing up and moving, or going into a totally different direction because the "prophet" gave them a word, but yet those words received were contrary to their spirit and to what God was doing in their lives. These types of words do not bring blessings, but destruction. A prophet will confirm, encourage and edify.

Wealth seeker

A false prophet will seek to make wealth from Gods' people. Consider the following passage. 2 Peter 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. We have all seen those ministries that offer you a "prophetic" word on tape for a monetary value. God's word is free; Jesus has already paid the price, and a very high price I may add. These type of ministries seek to make money from God's people, preying on the weak.

False prophets always smite their followers in the end

23And the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the donkey turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the donkey, to turn her into the way. 24But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side. 25And when the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again. 26And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
27And when the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the donkey with a staff.28And the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

Numbers 22:23-26

The false prophet will hinder the flow of the spirit. This is something that is very common. You may be in a service or meeting, and this person will need to come forward with a "word" that is contrary to the flow of the spirit. The spirit may be going in a direction of healings, and the false prophet will give a word regarding a person's prayer request for their lost son being delivered. Here they move away and quench the flow of the spirit, and turn the focus on themselves.

I would like to point out that there is a difference between a false prophet and a newbie prophet.

The difference here is the prophet in its beginning stages (which can take many years) will take correction, and humble themselves before the Lord and seek guidance.

The true prophet will die to their error, and try again.

The false prophet will not take correction and be arrogant.

The newbie prophet will take the correction, learn from it and move on. We are all human and make mistakes and fail, but that is not an excuse to call every new prophet out there that misses it a false prophet. You will know them by their fruit, and by the gift of discerning of spirits.

A true prophet knows what its like to let it go. A prophet's growth is measured by their ability to die daily, as the Apostle Paul writes. They die to the fact that they missed it. They die to the fact that they did not hear correctly.

The false prophet may not realize they are in deception,
(nor do their followers at all) but they can be broken and free from all the lies of the enemy.

That is what we as the body of Christ are supposed to be doing, building each other up. If a person in deception is humbled, he (or she) will need to sit in total submission and begin afresh in his call with the Lord, learn to be a servant and then the Lord can work in him (her) and expose all the areas where the deception has entered. (the false prophets followers will all need healing or they will never be the same) Consider the following verse.Matthew 18:15 "Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.

Matthew 18:16 -17 "But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that 'by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

For those who refuse to listen, then following scripture applies.2 John 1:10 -11 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

Those who continue to be in deception, arrogance and fail to recognize their sin, the word is very clear. Do not receive him into your house, church, social group. This will only bring a curse into your lives and to the lives of others.

It is important to note to break all ties and spiritual links with these types of people, and move on.

And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face.
Deuteronomy 34:10

"When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.
Deuteronomy 18:22

'But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.'
Deuteronomy 18:20

5And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
Deuteronomy 13:5

And Elijah said to them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
I Kings 18:40

The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken.
Deuteronomy 18:15

Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, "This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world."
John 6:14

Question: "How can I recognize a false teacher / false prophet?"

Answer:
Jesus warned us that "false Christs and false prophets" will come and will attempt to deceive even God's elect (Matthew 24:23-27; see also 2 Peter 3:3 and Jude 17-18). To best guard yourself against falsehood and false teachers - know the truth. To spot a counterfeit, study the real thing. Any believer who is, "rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15), and who makes a careful study of the Bible, can identify false doctrine. For example, a believer who has read the activities of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Matthew 3:16-17 will immediately question any doctrine that denies the Trinity. Therefore, "step one" is to study the Bible and judge all teaching by what the scripture says.

Jesus said "a tree is known by his fruit" (Matthew 12:33). When looking for "fruit," here are three specific tests to apply to any teacher to determine the accuracy of his or her teaching:

1) What does this teacher say about Jesus? In Matthew 16:15, Jesus asks, "Whom say ye that I am?" Peter answers, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God," and for this answer Peter is called "blessed." In 2 John 9, we read, "Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son." In other words, Jesus Christ and His work of redemption is of utmost importance; beware anyone who denies that Jesus is equal with God, who downplays Jesus' substitutionary death, or who rejects Jesus' humanity. First John 2:22 says, "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son."

2) Does this teacher preach the gospel? The gospel is defined as the good news concerning Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection, according to the scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). As nice as they sound, the statements "God loves you," "God wants us to feed the hungry," and "God wants you to be wealthy" are NOT the complete message of the gospel. As Paul warns in Galatians 1:7, "There be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ." No one, not even a great preacher, has the right to change the message that God gave us. "If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:9).

3) Does this teacher exhibit character qualities that glorify the Lord? Speaking of false teachers, Jude 11 says, "They have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah." In other words, a false teacher can be known by his pride (Cain's rejection of God's plan), greed (Balaam's prophesying for money), and rebellion (Korah's promotion of himself over Moses).

For further study, review those books of the Bible that were written specifically to combat false teaching within the church: Galatians, 2 Peter, 2 John, and Jude. It is often difficult to spot a false teacher / false prophet. That is what a "wolf in sheep's clothing" is all about. Satan and his demons masquerade as "angels of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14), and his ministers masquerade as servants of righteousness (2 Corinthians 11:15). Only by being thoroughly familiar with the truth will we be able to recognize a counterfeit.

Voice,

Your post and your presentations are excellent. The falsehood spread by those you have described is extremely prevailent today and many are being captured to their own destruction. It is the individual's own responsibility to avoid this onslaught and the Lord will hold each accountable. What the decerning believer can do, which you have done, is to expose the dangers and to warn those who entertain the false prophet and false teacher. Especially those who front with a "christian" cover.

Good post.

I posted something today about a man I believe to be a false prophet. I saw on a site that a large percentage of people believed in this man, Ronald Weinland. I could not believe that so many people would be misguided by him. This is something I think we will see more and more. Maybe I should have not posted about him, but after I read things about him and what he says, I was sickened by him. I felt compelled to say something.

All true false prophets front with a Christian cover. Those that are not supposed Christians are openly declaring heathenism. It is not the heathens we need to worry about. They are easy to spot. The ones that are the church's concern are those that put on a guise of Christianity, but really are not.
Do you know it is impossible for a false prophet to follow the doctrines and teachings of the apostles. That is the best way to see these wolves in sheep's clothing. Ask yourself, do they and can they follow the doctrines and teachings of Christ and the apostles.? When they error, do they seek forgiveness and repentance is another way?

As best as I can remember, the part of the treating about the new babie prophets, is right on, and a first I have ever seen in a treating. Great post, thanks for it!

Very good thread.

I was actually going to start one myself after reading a certain person go on and on and on about the judgments of the United States and how the last Hurricane was going to destroy New Orleans...(which didn't happen).

uh...here's a good indicator.

A true prophet won't have much money: because satan will be working full time against him....their pocketbooks will tell you alot because even when God blesses them, satan will send in hordes to take away the blessing.

Proof positive: Elijah was by a brook and needed ravens to feed him. John the baptist lived in the wilderness and ate locusts and honey, Moses wandered in the desert and found a wife and a father in law among a small herd of sheep, Jeremiah was thrown into a pit, Joseph into a cistern, Abraham was sent to a foreign land with few possessions, Jacob worked for unc Laban for 14 years, ......

Did satan know who they were: uh yes: He assaulted Elijah by the leaders of the day, Ahab & Jezebel plus a multitude of the trusty followers and false prophets, John was wanted and killed by Herod for a dance, Moses was chased by Pharoah and his men 2 times, Jeremiah was hated by all including the established high priesthood, Joseph was hated by his own brothers, Abraham had many adventures with many lean times and encounters with kings, Lot, Haggar and her son Ishmael, etc....

Sometimes they end up getting an earthly blessing. Even Job got one. But first the time of testing was fierce and at times grevious. When God says to satan, here's my man, satan begs to test them and invariably he get's his wish.

I missed that Al.

I'm sorry she/he tried to project that on you. It certainly sounds like they were trying to send a curse on you.

If I find that person on this forum again.....trust me....I'll be taking all this to the leaders of this forum.

That person does not EVER need to be on here again. She is a false prophet and is cursing people.

I have felt a very evil spirit behind those posts.

There are a couple "new" posters that seem a bit suspicious.

And there are a few others and their proclaimations of doom for the United States. I think its all a matter of the spirit behind it.

There is a difference between saying we need to repent and seek God and admitting that we are not perfect....

to outright calling the U.S.A an evil nation who is going to have the wrath of God on it.

The latter is an outright curse on us and we should be speaking out against such things.

But the devil is fooled because all that does is give God the opportunity to show himself strong.
Testing can be grievous..If we would only give God the opportunity to reveal himself in our weakness.
When we don't trust him he imposes it on us...Then we are forced to see it. But it's done in love. It's happened to me on a couple of occasions..

Jesus despised his own testing and trials and having to lower Himself to Godman status. If the testing is of a high order, God does provide a way out. Sure it happens in weakness, because when satan goes after the prophets, he knows who they are and they know who he is. It's not like it's a mystery to them. But, when he takes you on by and through the ignorance of others, on and on and on and on, the church will say it's your sins, your neighbor will pity you and do nothing, the subtle ignorance of people will effect your health, finances, friendships...etc

Just think, if there is but a couple people that need to be corner and you have the advantage of being invisible and these people are going to change the history of the world, you would spend alot of time around them devising mischief. I would imagine after about 7 years you'd be worn out. First of all, I am not sure the devil is fooled. Everything that God has said has come true. He has a pretty good idea that the outcome will be as it is written.

But, he is a fighter and he will not go down without a fight. He doesn't have a choice. Although he likes the first part of the Great Tribulation, he is not a big fan of it's end. Of course he wanted to rule and reign forever but it will not be.

Anyway, I think this all off topic anyway. The question is how do you recoginize a prophet and I indicated they won't be having a very good time. On that I am sure we can agree.

There are many false prophets to be sure. It is quite easy to spot them as they cannot perceive the simplicity which is in Christ. But we must be careful not to be witch-hunters as well. Getting over pre-occupied with what may become a spirit of inquisition holds a danger in it's own right. We are to seek out the pure, and not the vile. Voice's article accurately points out that an immature prophet is different than a false prophet although these may be lumped together in the eyes of the inquisitor. I have often heard the verse used...a good tree does not produce bad fruit, to condemn a true brother who happens to be in present error, while neglecting that...a bad tree doesn't produce good fruit.

The fact is, that there will be a mixture of fruit in the development of the disciple. We must be careful to discern by the Spirit. I feel the the spirit of inquisition is every bit as dangerous to the Body as false prophets.

When the devil steals the Lord uses it. He steals from the prophets and in so doing gives God all the more opportunity to demonstrate himself and teach the prophet. (and those who hear)

What seems like darkness done by the enemies theft..

when examined closely

turns out to be an awesome stepping stone to greater grace, mercy and revelation.

The devil stole medical care from me...Jesus healed me. Had l been able to run to the Dr. all the time l wouldn't have had to depend on the Lord. I didn't ask for healing only strength to endure the illness. He choose to heal. I was surprised by it and l learned a lesson.

Inquisition? It is hard but God calls us to discern and speak. As our tents are filled we are to lengthen our cords and strengthen our stakes

and he will in turn strengthen us from the east wind coming.

Amen. The Lord makes the delineation in His Word which is the final arbiter.

That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
Genesis 18:25

14Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you.
Deuteronomy 13:14

18When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God.
Deuteronomy 13:18

1Thou shalt not sacrifice unto the LORD thy God any bullock, or sheep, wherein is blemish, or any evilfavouredness: for that is an abomination unto the LORD thy God.2If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant,3And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;4And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:5Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.

Deuteronomy 17:1-5

But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my Name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
Deuteronomy 18:20

But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has counseled rebellion against the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, to seduce you from the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall purge the evil from among you.
Deuteronomy 13:5

The man who acts presumptuously by not listening to the priest who stands there to serve the LORD your God, nor to the judge, that man shall die; thus you shall purge the evil from Israel.
Deuteronomy 17:12

Then the LORD said to me, "The prophets are prophesying falsehood in My Name. I have neither sent them nor commanded them nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a false vision, divination, futility and the deception of their own minds.
Jeremiah 14:14

And if anyone still prophesies, then his father and mother who gave birth to him will say to him, 'You shall not live, for you have spoken falsely in the name of the LORD'; and his father and mother who gave birth to him will pierce him through when he prophesies.
Zechariah 13:3

But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Acts 5:3
Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and died. Great fear came on all who heard these things.
Acts 5:5

8And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.9Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.10Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
Acts 5:8-10

13Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.14In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.15And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

16So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:17And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:18And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.19And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.20And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:21When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.22So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.23And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.24And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

25And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

Now a man or a woman who is a medium or a spiritist shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones, their bloodguiltiness is upon them.'
Leviticus 20:27

Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
Exodus 22:18

26For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Hebrews 10: 26-31

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.

For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Spirit.
2 Peter 1:21

And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Revelation 19:20

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Revelation 20:10

23And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. 24And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. 25And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. 26And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it 27And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Keep in mind that this present earth will be destroyed with fire and replaced with a new earth for eternity .... and no one knows how large the new planet will be. This dimension has not been revealed by the Lord. So the idea that the new Jerusalem will not fit on the new earth is foolishness. Better take the Lord at His Word for the measurements He has given for the new Jerusalem that will be placed upon a new earth.

It will be a new age of earth....same old earth. This has happened in the past. There was an age before our present one...the age in which Satan rebelled. God destroyed that age and started over. Same earth, new age.
Stephen
So how do you know this. Give me the scriptures that tell of the same "old" earth that will exist in the Lord's eternity. I know that the present earth has been in existence since the beginning of creation so that is no new revelation. The scriptures support this truth and one can observe the old age of the earth and the universe. You give scriptural support for the new earth being the same "old" earth and then I will give you scripture that tells differently.

11 Peter 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

3:6 Whereby the WORLD THAT THEN WAS, being overflowed with water, PERISHED:

3:7 But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

3:13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

The age before our present age...perished. Same earth but the age perished. The same thing will happen again. All evil things shall "melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are herein shall be burned up" but the earth itself will still be....the earth itself. A new age begins.

Very good thread.

I was actually going to start one myself after reading a certain person go on and on and on about the judgments of the United States and how the last Hurricane was going to destroy New Orleans...(which didn't happen).

When people curse others or even nations....they are in danger of having worse curses come down on them.

Cindy,

Our forum prophet predicted that on Thursday, Aug 28th something was going to happen to me and guess what? Still with you all and I haven't a scratch.

Gods Blessings,

Al

I missed that Al.

I'm sorry she/he tried to project that on you. It certainly sounds like they were trying to send a curse on you.

If I find that person on this forum again.....trust me....I'll be taking all this to the leaders of this forum.

That person does not EVER need to be on here again. She is a false prophet and is cursing people.

I have felt a very evil spirit behind those posts.

There are a couple "new" posters that seem a bit suspicious.

This implies that the earth will also itself be destroyed .... not just the works and the heavens.

>No one who reads chapter 21 can by any stretch of the imagination see the new Jerusalem as anything but a celestial city place upon the earth. You say it is the Body of Christ. The verses clearly indicate that these will enter the city and are not the city itself.

Also, let me remind you that the measurement given is of the total parameter of the square city which is given as 12,000 furlongs [3,000 furlongs per side]. The city is a cube and has equal length, width, and height. Measuring two lengths and two widths returns 12,000 furlongs for the total ground parameter of the city. This translates into about 340 miles per segment. So the base measurement is a 340 mile square .... 340 miles long and 340 miles wide. The height will be the same 340 mile equivalent since the city is a cube. This is not the picture presented by some on the forum.

The distruction of the earth and it's works is symbolic not litteral.... Or else Jesus came in vain, becauce He came to take away the curse from the earth....That Adam brought.

Stephen you are way to carnal. When Jesus said; those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, do you think He meant physical eyes and ears or spiritual eyes and ears....

back to the topic (which false prophets and teachers hate discussing) ...

"How can I recognize a false teacher / false prophet?"

As Paul warns in Galatians 1:7, "There be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ."

No one, not even a great preacher, has the right to change the message that God gave us.

Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing
(Recognizing a false teacher by specific characteristics)

By Jesse Morrell

I am not one to see a legion in every pig or a snake in every garden. But through studying the Word of God and observing many modern preachers I can boldly declare in the full confidence and blessing of God that there are wolves disguised as sheep amongst our flocks! Though there are many wolves in the woods and fields of secularism and false religions, I am afraid that there are some who have wondered out of those territories looking for food and have entered into our own pastures.

False teachers can be distinctly defined because their characteristics are obvious enough and are clearly outlined in scripture. Yet it seems that so few believers recognize them in these modern times. The True Shepherd spoke much on this issue, yet it seems to be a greatly neglected subject today as though our generation is exempt and our Churches are not in any danger of false teachers. Wolves pose a serious threat to the flock of Christ so Christians must be wise and on the look out for these types. This message is not one as “the boy who cried wolf” but rather is a serious and sobering warning. Many sheep have been lead astray and have been caught in a deadly trap disguised as a beneficial program. Many Churches have let down the walls of discernment and thus become spiritually broken down cities being trampled upon by the enemy. Our hearts must become as Jeremiahs who said “My heart within me is broken because of the prophets”. (Jer 23:9).

Every single minister must be measured by the Word of God and not by their degrees or popularity. No minister should be exempt from this. No other tool can adequately measure a minister than the Holy Scriptures. We should be so familiar with the truth that when false teaching and false teachers are seen and heard by us they will stick out as black sheep and be automatically recognized. If we do not know the Word of God we will not recognize the lies of Satan. Many modern ministers would certainly be in big trouble if those in the pews actually started reading their bibles as they should. If some congregations would open their bibles certain preachers would have to shut their mouths. They would be caught red handed as the foul, fiendish, frauds they really are.

Ezekiel’s ministry was sure not to be a popular one when he was told to “prophesy against the prophets…who prophesy out of their own hearts.” (Ez 13:2). It’s time that we also risk our reputations and “prophesy against the prophets” that appear to be helping the body of Christ, but when in reality they are gravely hurting the body of Christ. This is not a “naming names” article, there would be too many names to name, but it clearly reveals scriptural characteristics to equip every Christian to individually examine ministers.

While working on this message I awoke in the middle of the night after tossing, turning, and even sweating under the fear and torment of the thought that I myself was a heretic for writing a message such as this. Then I realized that this overwhelming fear was the handiwork of the accuser. I began to rest in the fact that all the points made are backed up by the truth of the Word. It is my hope and prayer that this message hits the devil hard and that it becomes a thorn in his side.

Their appearance:

“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” (Matt 7:15)

“Oh I’m not too worried about false prophets. I’m sure I’ll recognize them when I see them” someone might think to themselves. You don't know the nature of deception. Recognizing false teachers is not easily done considering that they have the appearance of being sheep. Does a spy have the appearance of being a government official? If he did he wouldn’t be able to accomplish his purpose. The mission of a deceiver is to deceive. Deceivers will not always appear deceptive, or else they would never be able to deceive anyone. Their lies will always be disguised as truth. Beware because their charm will be enticing and their glamour blinding for those who refuse to be discerning.

The neighbors of caught serial killers always say “I just can’t believe that he could commit such a horrendous act. I knew him personally; he was such a nice guy.”
Likewise when a nice, friendly, commercial smile preacher teaches doctrines which are contrary to the Word of God, his followers defend him by saying “Oh but he’s just so sincere and genuine.” Be careful. Appearance can be quite deceiving. “Never judge a book by its cover” and never judge a man by his outward appearance. (John 7:24). He may look like a fellow believer outwardly, but inwardly he is a wolf who is out for himself and not for the flock. While many believe a false prophet is the town nut who has no teeth and walks around babbling spiritual nonsense, which is not always the case. Often they will look better and more successful then everyone else, portraying the image that everyone would want to be like. Their grass many look greener and their water clearer, but they are poisoned with lies and seasoned with deceit.

Their reputation:

“Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For so did their fathers to the false prophets.” (Lu 6:26)

It would seem that the very ones that the earth respects and adores are the very ones that Heaven rejects and abhors. You must always be cautious when you hear men highly singing the praises of a certain minister and telling you how wonderful he truly is. There is a problem if all men speak well of him. It seems to be often that those whom everyone speaks nasty of are the ones that I find uncompromisingly preaching the Word of God. The top concern of a false teacher is to please man while the interest of a true and faithful witness is to please God. Those who please man often do not please God, and those who please God often do not please man.

The popular minister is not like Christ who was thrown out of the synagogues, who even foretold to those who follow Him “They will put you out of the synagogues” as well. (John 16:2). All of God’s greatest men have been some of the most hated men. Martin Luther who started the protestant movement, John Wesley and George Whitefield who founded early Methodism and sparked some of the great revivals of history, William & Catherine Booth who formed and lead the Salvation Army, were all people that were kicked out of the established Church of their day. If a "good" name or a "good" reputation automatically meant a good preacher, then what about the early Church that was "spoken against everywhere"? (Ac 28:22) Consider the perception of the people who observed both Jeremiah and the false prophets. While Jeremiah shouted "violence and plunder" (Jer 20:8), the false prophets gently spoke of "peace, peace". (Jer 6:14). How odd, how strange, how abrasive, Jeremiah must have appeared to the onlookers. He was wrongly thought of as being negative, condemning, and judgmental compared to the easy, tolerant, smooth talking prophets of his day. Jeremiahs spoke the words that shattered like a hammer. The false prophets spoke soft words that couldn’t prick even the strongest conscience. Their messages may drip honey and their words are smoother then oil but their feet go down to death and their doctrines lay hold of hell.

I am thoroughly convinced that a minister will be rejected by Heaven if he is accepted by the world, “for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? (2Co 6:14) I can not think of a single minister of God in the New Testament that got along with the world. Most of them ended up being martyred. Those who get along with the world must not be getting along with the God who the world has rejected. A false teacher will be allowed to preach even on the vilest of TV channels. You can expect to find their books even in secular stores and hear their messages of “How to never be hurt again” and “Walking in the anointing of wealth” on secular channels like I have seen. A false teacher will have the stamp of approval of the devil, the stamp of approval of the world, but will not have the stamp of approval of Heaven. The only thing Heaven will stamp on them will be the words “Depart”.

The false teachers will reign high and lifted up on the mountains of acceptance while the true and faithful are forced into the desert of rejection, soon to be imprisoned and beheaded. Even the most bizarre "prophetic" words are being well received while the foundational and biblical message of "repent" is entirely neglected and largely ignored.

Rather then being salt we have many candy-land preachers who are serving the never satisfied bellies of men. "The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own power; and my people love to have it so.” (Jer 5:31).

Their message:

“For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly, Saying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace.” (Jer. 8:11, Eze 13:16)

The comparison between Jeremiahs message and the message of the other prophets stands in sharp contrast. As Jeremiah shouted his message of “violence and plunder” (Jer 20:8) for Israel if they didn’t repent and turn back to God, the other prophets came with a message of peace and prosperity for the wicked and backslidden nation. They became very popular and loved with their ivory-tower message. They gave false hope and false peace because “there is no peace,’ says the Lord, ‘for the wicked." (Isa 48:22). They make the enemies of God feel as though they were His friends. They make those whom God is against feel as though God were for them. They flower up that which is ugly by calling that which is abominable, desirable. (God loves us not because we are lovable but because He is loving). They make those who are in terrible danger of hell feel as though they were in secure safety on a cruise ship to Heaven. “They continually say to those who despise me, ‘The Lord has said, "you shall have peace"'; and to everyone who walks according to the dictates of his own heart, they say, ‘no evil shall come upon you.'” (Jer 23:17). The refreshment which they give is a delusion and the comfort they give is imaginary. They will prophecy lies and deceit to sooth those who are on their way to eternal destruction.

In David Servant's book called "The Great Gospel Deception," he wrote, "Of course, no teacher in the church is going to stand up and declare that what he is teaching is contrary to the New Testament. Rather, he will neglect certain important scriptures and twist others to persuade his constituency that he is teaching the truth. This is being done today by many very popular and influential teachers who teach about a grace that is foreign to the bible. The grace they proclaim is not the true grace that leads to holiness."

The deceptive part is that they will appear to be preaching grace, but it's another grace. They appear to be preaching the gospel, but it's another gospel. They appear to be preaching Christ, but it's another Christ. The subtlety is so deceptive that few are able to make the distinction.

A false teacher will tell his people whatever it is that they want to hear. They will play the chameleon and will always be politically correct. They avoid any truth, no matter how important, that could be controversial or could rock the boat. They are peace-keepers, not peace-makers. Their messages keep the peace between themselves and men rather then creating peace between men and God. Their messages are always pleasant and easy to swallow, intentionally avoiding the heavy and hard scriptures in the bible. A false teacher goes with the crowd. God’s men, more often then not, go against it!

A great preacher once said “heresy is highly exalting one biblical truth over the rest, so that other biblical truths become neglected.”
False teachers speak only of blessing, prosperity, and the favor of God but will not touch on Gods righteous wrath or His holy indignation. They promise an easy life, Christ promises a crucified life. They serve the flesh as opposed to serving The Spirit. They appeal to the greedy heart of man as opposed to the conscience of man. The days that Paul warned about are devastatingly upon us, though few seem to recognize it. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” (2 Ti 4:3-4). These congregations have an appetite for fleshly pleasure, a craving for self satisfaction, a lust for covetous prosperity and power. Their Christianity is a façade and a front to mask their worldly and fleshly goals, ambitions, and desires.

These teachers sit on thrones of greed and are crowned with covetousness. Their messages will manipulate scriptures to mean the exact opposite of what it was originally for. “Whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap” (Gal 6:7) is often used when a preacher is begging for money. However in context this particular scripture has nothing to do with money but everything to do with death and life. The following verse says: “For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” (Gal 6:8). Whatever happened to freely giving and expecting nothing back? Modern preachers will teach “give and expect your blessing back!” Giving to get is greedy giving.

Christ had no “Cadillac donkey” as one preacher put it, but he did come humbly on a borrowed donkey! (Zechariah 9:9). “Christ became poor so that you can become rich” they teach. The early Church would not have been convinced of such a doctrine. How many of these hot-shot prosperity preachers can say with the great Apostle Paul “To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless”? (1 Cor 4:11) You can be rich and be a Christian. God blesses you to bless others. You can also be poor and be a Christian. The problem is when faith becomes a ticket to riches and Christians are taught that they are entitled to wealth or they are being ripped off by the devil, or are weak in faith.

So rather then preaching life eternal, many are preaching life enhancement. Rather then preaching deliverance from sin and hell, they preach deliverance from suffering and hurt. Ray Comfort wrote “The modern gospel has degenerated into means of happiness, rather than one of righteousness.”

Their audience:

“Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.” (Mt 24:11)

The pulpit-less street corner preachers are often viewed as being false preachers while those with large mega churches are thought of as having “the blessing and anointing of God”. This again is judging by outward appearance and by the worldly standard of success as opposed to judging the content of their message by the scriptures. If John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness, or Jesus Christ came preaching on the hill top, or the Apostle Paul came preaching in the market place, I wonder what modern Christianity would think of them? It says that “many” false teachers will “deceive many”. This means that they will have many followers, even enough to fill a mega-Church. If we measure a man's anointing or the blessing of God on a ministry by how many people believe in the message and the messenger, then the false prophets in the Old Testament would be from God and men like Jeremiah would be considered a liar.

“For false christ’s and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” (Mk 13:22) A false teacher will deceive both the sinful and the uneducated. Their audience will be made up of both sinners and Saints. They appeal to the sinner because sinners never are made to feel bad about their lifestyles, but rather are given false hope and false peace. They appeal to the Saint because they appear to be the real deal; they are wearing sheep’s clothing though they are wolves. “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.” (2 Cor 11:13-14) May this ring in our ears and sting in our hearts!

Their Motive:

“Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks?” (Ezekiel 34:2)

The motive and reason behind a false teacher is entirely selfish where as a true and faithful minister is entirely selfless. A false teacher has an eye on people’s bank accounts while a true preacher has his eyes on eternity.
False teachers may have the appearance of loving people, yet they are truly only concerned about themselves to further and enhance their own possessions and careers. They feed themselves when they need to be feeding the flocks. They skin the sheep alive to cloths themselves, leaving the sheep beaten, battered, and bloody to die. Paul was “poor, yet making many rich” (2 Co 6:10) while these men are rich by making many poor! With their manipulating words and twisting of scriptures they ransack and plunder the pockets of unsuspecting people to line their own. Some preachers have no shame of this and openly admit in their sermons to their congregations that they are out for prosperity.

Leonard Ravenhill wrote: “Preachers who have homes and cottages by the lake, a boat on that lake, and a big bank balance, still beg for more…These dear, doll-like preachers-boys no longer change their suits once a day, but two or three times a day. They preach the Jesus of the stables, but themselves live in swank hotels. For their own lusts they bleed the audience financially in the name of the One who had to borrow a penny to illustrate His sermon. They wear expensive Hollywood suits in honor of One who wore a peasant’s robe…How fearful will all this be in the judgment morning?”

The son of Leonard, David Ravenhill wrote in his smashing article “Modern Day Money Changers”, “I’m convinced that the carnal, cunning, conniving, crooked crooks that Jesus drove out of the Temple are still among us today.
These modern day moneychangers are forever devising new and deceptive doctrines to defraud God’s people out of His/their money. These masters of deceit have now set up their changing tables throughout the Christian television industry…Stop pandering to these moneychangers. These men and women live like kings while spending your money to buy mansions and jets for themselves. They dine in the finest restaurants, wear the latest designer fashions and then have the audacity to tell you that you can live the same way as long as you give to their ministry.” Why pay for one mans mansion when you can help finance God’s mission?

The devil showed Christ all the Kingdoms of the earth and said “All these things I’ll give you if you fall down and worship me” (Matt 4:9). Many preachers basically show the church all the riches and wealth of the world and say “All these things God will give you if you reach into your pocket and give to me.”

A true preacher speaks for God while a false preacher speaks for himself. “There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof.” (Ezekiel 22:25) The ingredients that make up their ministries are: greed, covetousness, jealousy, lies, and selfishness. Because they are self seeking and self serving their followers are the same. They are greedy, ungodly men who outwardly appear righteous, but the inside of the cup is filthy and covered in slime.

A false teacher may preach a message saturated with truth, but it will be seasoned with lies. They will use the bible and speak the name of Christ. Their Christian language will be the same as ours, and that is their deception. Even the devil lies with half truths! These men may encourage people to go after God, but will not convict people of their sin. A preacher is “to exhort and convict those who contradict.” (1 Tim 1:9). They never warn people that their sin is destructive to their life, deadly to their soul, and disgusting to a Holy God. A watchman that does not blow the trumpet when the sword is coming must either be sleeping with everyone else or not love the city!

Their results:

“And He spoke a parable to them: "Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch?” (Lu 6:39)

The sad truth is that many modern preachers are empty wells, spoiled milk, and broken bridges. They are captives who promise freedom, slaves who guarantee liberty. “Both prophet and priest are profane; yes, in my house I have found their wickedness’ says the Lord.” (Jer 23:11) They have a reputation among men for being alive but are just as dead in their sins as the worst of men in the eyes of God.

If they were of God, they would be like God. If they walked with Jesus, they would preach like Jesus. A false teacher will give birth to false converts. “But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they would have turned them from their evil way and from the evil of their doings.” (Jer 23:22).

They will never, or rarely, speak on the anger and wrath of God because they risks becoming unpopular, so those who sit under these men feel that God accepts them just as they are, and that there is no need for repentance.
Many today are being sold forgiveness but not at the cost of repentance. They are promised Heaven yet without holiness. Men need medicine but are receiving candy. “Because with lies you have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and you have strengthened the hands of the wicked, so that he does not turn from his wicked way to save his life.” (Ezekiel 13:22). This was also true in Jeremiahs day “They commit adultery and walk in lies; They also strengthen the hands of evildoers, So that no one turns back from his wickedness. All of them are like Sodom to Me, and her inhabitants like Gomorrah.” (Jer 23:14). The hands of sinners were strengthened in both Ezekiel and Jeremiahs day, and because of modern messages which lack repentance but are saturated in the love of God, sinners hold tightly to their sins today!

A false teacher will turn the grace of God into lusciousness by teaching that God came to save men in their sin, not from their sin. “For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Jude 1:4). They make the grace of God into a license for wickedness, thus denying the Lord God and the Lord Jesus. These men ultimately say “Enjoy your sin and enjoy Jesus too”. This is the old destructive lie which says Jesus can be your Savior but doesn’t have to be your Lord; God is pleased with you even in disobedience. This truly is the modern heresy which has inebriated many. “Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know, and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered to do all these abominations?” (Jer. 7:9-10) This is the despicable message of freedom to sin rather then freedom from sin. They speak death disguised as life. They lead to bondage cloaked as freedom. They snuff out the lamp of God's Law and so lawlessness flauntingly parades itself in the darkness.

A true shepherd will lead the flock to the pastures of God's word for nourishment, yet these shepherds lead the flock to the slaughter house of false doctrine. A true preacher will lead people to rivers of eternal life to freely drink. Martin Luther wrote concerning true preachers of eternal life by saying "They [believers] should also acknowledge such preachers as right Shepard’s, that is, as servants of Christ and stewards of God, and pay no attention at all to the fact that the world proclaims and damns them as heretics and seducers. Those who preach something else than the gospel...may indeed praise themselves ten times with the name of the Apostles, adorn themselves with the name and title of the Christian Church, and even raise the dead. Actually they are horrible wolves and murderers that do not spare the flock of Christ, but scatter, torture, and slaughter it."

The Answer

“But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry”
(2 Tim 4:5).

After the Apostle Paul had warned Pastor Timothy of the coming itching ear preachers, the well experienced Apostle told the Pastor exactly what he should do: the work of an evangelist! “But you be watchful in all things,
endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Tim 4:5). It was as if Paul was saying “yes, men are preaching lies and will continue to deceive the multitudes. But as for you, preach the truth”. We
can constantly judge and condemn other ministries, or we can have ministries of our own. It is the truth that will prevail against lies!

David Wilkerson said “We are in a famine in this land. A famine of hearing the Word of the Lord and it’s going to get worse, it’s going to rage, and many are going to starve spiritually and fall by the wayside on the right and on the left…Name me one Jeremiah type preacher on television. Name me one man who stands unashamedly, not afraid of his income, not afraid of anything! Name one in the media now who’s standing up like Jeremiah or John
the Baptist! Where are they? Where are the voices? ... The pulpit was meant to be a burning bush, where a fire was never to go out. And the man who stood in that sacred pulpit is suppose to be a man shut in with God, a man who waits on God, in God’s presence until he hears the Word of the Lord, until he hears from the throne of God. And he comes out before the people with the mind of God. He’s to speak with plainness the Scriptures said, his speech not in the wisdom of man. He’s to speak with spiritual authority. He’s to be absolutely fearless. He’s to name sin. He’s to be the voice of the living God in these last days! This is a burning bush!”

If you want to be a true and faithful witness, you must seek to serve the glory of God and not the glory of yourself. You must be out to expand the Kingdom of God and not to expand your own wallet with earthly treasure that will perish anyways. You must be a salty preacher causing mouths to thirst for righteousness and cuts to burn with conviction.

Vance Havner said "God's preacher is not popular...The King sent Micaiah to prison with hard fare prescribed, bread and water of affliction. True prophets are not always rewarded with an increase in salary and a Church
downtown. Many of G
