I would like to put out the supposition that the "trees" in Eden were not actually "trees" of the literal bark and leaf type.

Gen 2:8 And Jehovah God planted a garden eastward, in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
Gen 2:9 And out of the ground made Jehovah God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Eze 31:8 The cedars in the garden of God could not hide it; the fir-trees were not like its boughs, and the plane-trees were not as its branches; nor was any tree in the garden of God like unto it in its beauty.
Eze 31:9 I made it fair by the multitude of its branches, so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied it.

Possibly, but, seeing that the supposition may go outside of what we have been taught in Sunday School, I figured this might be a better spot as the conversation may become argumentative at times. wink.gif smile.gif

smile.gif Hello Maz. Yes, I think there is symbolism involved. Trees are symbolic of people, and, sometimes spiritual beings. I think parts of Gen. chapters 1 and 2 have symbolic language like Revelations does. Fitting, as they are the first and last books and tell of the start, and the end.

Jewish teachers used parables when they spoke, why not when they wrote (symbolism..) ?

All this talk about gardens and planting seeds and bearing fruit.....along with statements like 'ears but can't hear' and 'eyes but can't see'...

Who knows, its a possibility..

Now I'm craving a bologna sandwich with home grown tomatoes....

It must be wonderful to live where you can still have a tomato sandwich. Our garden is kaput at this time of year. Each season I tell myself I'll put in a fall garden so I can enjoy "real" tomatos but...I seldom do and the few times I did either bugs or an early frost got them. sad.gif I'll have to wait until next year.

This is a very interesting topic. Have any of you ever read the first and second books of Adam and Eve? There is quite a bit of information regarding trees and the garden. It isn't included in the "real" bible of course, but there is a lot of good stuff in there and none of it goes against the bible. It paints more of a picture of Genesis and what happened after creation.

Hi Scott. Thanks. I've heard of those books, I don't think I've read them though. I moved this topic to the Bible study section here http://www.christian-forum.net/index.php?s...mp;#entry215698

1And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

2Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; Whom art thou like in thy greatness?

3Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs.

4The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent her little rivers unto all the trees of the field.

5Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth.

6All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under his shadow dwelt all great nations.

7Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters.

8The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty.

9I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.

Doesnt this say it all???? Not only is satan being called a cedar tree it also tells you this tree/satan was in the garden.....

Do you see verse 9 ????? It says all the trees in the garden envied him....come on!!! trees dont have the emotion to envy.....

And please look at the manuscripts if you are able ,,,,,,There are to types of trees mentioned,,,,

1 word for tree is "ets, ates; from # 6095, stock tree, timber, wood." It is a common tree.

However the trees in the garden of Eden reads, # 6095. We read in the Strong's Hebrew dictionary; "Atsah, aw-tsaw, prime root, prop. to fasten (or make firm), i.e., to close (the eyes): shut." Under # 6095 Hebrew for trees in the garden) page 90 of Strong's Hebrew dictionary, the other reference to this is # 6096.

The # 6096; "Atseh, aw-tseh, from 6095; the spine, (as giving firmness to the body):-backbone." This # 6096 "atseh" is the tree referred to in Genesis 3:3. In referring to the fruit of a tree, then, you are talking about children.

We all understand it was a real garden,,,the point being made is,,,many of the trees mentioned in genesis are referring to people,,,,such as the "Tree of life" is Jesus Christ and the "Tree of knowledge of good and evil" is satan....

Mat 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Mat 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Mat 12:33 Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by its fruit.

Joh 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh it away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he cleanseth it, that it may bear more fruit.

Mat 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but the corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

Mat 3:10 And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Joh 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

Jer 17:7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in Jehovah, and whose trust Jehovah is.
Jer 17:8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, that spreadeth out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when heat cometh, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

Jer 11:16 Jehovah called thy name, A green olive-tree, fair with goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken.
Jer 11:17 For Jehovah of hosts, who planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, because of the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have wrought for themselves in provoking me to anger by offering incense unto Baal.
Jer 11:18 And Jehovah gave me knowledge of it, and I knew it: then thou showedst me their doings.
Jer 11:19 But I was like a gentle lamb that is led to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.

Isa 37:31 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

Isa 27:6 In days to come shall Jacob take root; Israel shall blossom and bud; and they shall fill the face of the world with fruit.

Isa 14:29 Rejoice not, O Philistia, all of thee, because the rod that smote thee is broken; for out of the serpent's root shall come forth an adder, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.

Isa 11:1 And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots shall bear fruit.

Isa 4:2 In that day shall the branch of Jehovah be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

Son 2:3 As the apple-tree among the trees of the wood, So is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, And his fruit was sweet to my taste.

Pro 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; And he that is wise winneth souls.

Vine of the Earth

Deu 32:31 For their rock is not as our Rock, Even our enemies themselves being judges.
Deu 32:32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, And of the fields of Gomorrah: Their grapes are grapes of gall, Their clusters are bitter:
Deu 32:33 Their wine is the poison of serpents, And the cruel venom of asps.

Rev 14:18 And another angel came out from the altar, he that hath power over fire; and he called with a great voice to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Send forth thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.

Eze 28:13 Thou wast in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, the topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was in thee; in the day that thou wast created they were prepared.
Eze 28:14 Thou wast the anointed cherub that covereth: and I set thee, so that thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

Joh 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; so neither can ye, except ye abide in me.

Hos 10:1 Israel is a luxuriant vine, that putteth forth his fruit: according to the abundance of his fruit he hath multiplied his altars; according to the goodness of their land they have made goodly pillars.

Eze 19:10 Thy mother was like a vine, in thy blood, planted by the waters: it was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters.
Eze 19:11 And it had strong rods for the sceptres of them that bare rule, and their stature was exalted among the thick boughs, and they were seen in their height with the multitude of their branches.
Eze 19:12 But it was plucked up in fury, it was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up its fruit: its strong rods were broken off and withered; the fire consumed them.
Eze 19:13 And now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty land.
Eze 19:14 And fire is gone out of the rods of its branches, it hath devoured its fruit, so that there is in it no strong rod to be a sceptre to rule. This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.

Eze 17:2 Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel;
Eze 17:3 and say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: A great eagle with great wings and long pinions, full of feathers, which had divers colors, came unto Lebanon, and took the top of the cedar:
Eze 17:4 he cropped off the topmost of the young twigs thereof, and carried it unto a land of traffic; he set it in a city of merchants.
Eze 17:5 He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful soil; he placed it beside many waters; he set it as a willow-tree.
Eze 17:6 And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.
Eze 17:7 There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend its roots toward him, and shot forth its branches toward him, from the beds of its plantation, that he might water it.
Eze 17:8 It was planted in a good soil by many waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.
Eze 17:9 Say thou, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it may wither; that all its fresh springing leaves may wither? and not by a strong arm or much people can it be raised from the roots thereof.
Eze 17:10 Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the beds where it grew.
Eze 17:11 Moreover the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
Eze 17:12 Say now to the rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and brought them to him to Babylon:
Eze 17:13 and he took of the seed royal, and made a covenant with him; he also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land;

Jer 2:21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate branches of a foreign vine unto me?

Psa 80:8 Thou broughtest a vine out of Egypt: Thou didst drive out the nations, and plantedst it.
Psa 80:9 Thou preparedst room before it, And it took deep root, and filled the land.
Psa 80:10 The mountains were covered with the shadow of it, And the boughs thereof were like cedars of God.
Psa 80:11 It sent out its branches unto the sea, And its shoots unto the River.
Psa 80:12 Why hast thou broken down its walls, So that all they that pass by the way do pluck it?
Psa 80:13 The boar out of the wood doth ravage it, And the wild beasts of the field feed on it.
Psa 80:14 Turn again, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: Look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine,
Psa 80:15 And the stock which thy right hand planted, And the branch that thou madest strong for thyself.
Psa 80:16 It is burned with fire, it is cut down: They perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.

Jer 12:10 Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard, they have trodden my portion under foot, they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness.

Isa 5:1 Let me sing for my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved had a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:
Isa 5:2 and he digged it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also hewed out a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.
Isa 5:7 For the garden of Jehovah of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for justice, but, behold, oppression; for righteousness, but, behold, a cry.

Son 4:12 A garden shut up is my sister, my bride; A spring shut up, a fountain sealed.

Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for apart from me ye can do nothing.

Jotham and Israel as Trees

Jdg 9:7 And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.
Jdg 9:8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree, Reign thou over us.
Jdg 9:9 But the olive-tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?
Jdg 9:10 And the trees said to the fig-tree, Come thou, and reign over us.
Jdg 9:11 But the fig-tree said unto them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?
Jdg 9:12 And the trees said unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.
Jdg 9:13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?
Jdg 9:14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.
Jdg 9:15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.
Jdg 9:16 Now therefore, if ye have dealt truly and uprightly, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands
Jdg 9:17 (for my father fought for you, and adventured his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:
Jdg 9:18 and ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);
Jdg 9:19 if ye then have dealt truly and uprightly with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

Nebuchadnezzer as a Tree

Dan 4:20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;
Dan 4:21 whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was food for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the birds of the heavens had their habitation:
Dan 4:22 it is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong; for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

Zec 11:1 Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy cedars.
Zec 11:2 Wail, O fir-tree, for the cedar is fallen, because the goodly ones are destroyed: wail, O ye oaks of Bashan, for the strong forest is come down.
Zec 11:3 A voice of the wailing of the shepherds! for their glory is destroyed: a voice of the roaring of young lions! for the pride of the Jordan is laid waste.
Zec 11:4 Thus said Jehovah my God: Feed the flock of slaughter;
Zec 11:5 whose possessors slay them, and hold themselves not guilty; and they that sell them say, Blessed be Jehovah, for I am rich; and their own shepherds pity them not.
Zec 11:6 For I will no more pity the inhabitants of the land, saith Jehovah; but, lo, I will deliver the men every one into his neighbor's hand, and into the hand of his king; and they shall smite the land, and out of their hand I will not deliver them.
Zec 11:7 So I fed the flock of slaughter, verily the poor of the flock. And I took unto me two staves; the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock.
Zec 11:8 And I cut off the three shepherds in one month; for my soul was weary of them, and their soul also loathed me.
Zec 11:9 Then said I, I will not feed you: that which dieth, let it die; and that which is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let them that are left eat every one the flesh of another.

Two Witnesses

Rev 11:3 And I will give unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
Rev 11:4 These are the two olive trees and the two candlesticks, standing before the Lord of the earth.

Isa 40:6 A voice said, Cry! And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all its grace as the flower of the field!
Isa 40:7 The grass withers, the flower fades because the Spirit of Jehovah blows on it. Surely the people is grass.
Isa 40:8 The grass withers; the flower fades; but the Word of our God shall rise forever.

Isa 61:3 to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified.

Eze 17:2 Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel;
Eze 17:13 and he took of the seed royal, and made a covenant with him; he also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land;

Jdg 9:18 and ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);
Jdg 9:19 if ye then have dealt truly and uprightly with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

Nebuchadnezzer as a Tree

Dan 4:20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;

Zec 11:4 Thus said Jehovah my God: Feed the flock of slaughter;

Joseph

Gen 49:22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:

Mar 4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you is given the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all things are done in parables:

It was a real garden just like it says it was. If you noticed the Lord God walked in the garden with them.

Genisis 3
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

We all understand it was a real garden,,,the point being made is,,,many of the trees mentioned in genesis are referring to people,,,,such as the "Tree of life" is Jesus Christ and the "Tree of knowledge of good and evil" is satan....

So you're saying that sexual perversion was a cause of the fall instead of a result?

That doesn't sit right with me. How can someone who has been created in God's image, with a sinless nature, in perfect fellowship with God, have sexual perversion in them?

The conscience. After Eve ate of the tree and also gave Adam the fruit to eat, they immediately recognized their guilt, their shame, and from that point on they had knowledge of both the good and evil, or their conscience was awakened, better yet, sin entered in.

Researcher,

I, also like you, believe that there are many layers to deciphering the Bible and that parables make up a huge part, as the last book of the Bible is nearly ALL symbolic and allegorical, representing something else. It can all be traced to other scriptures within the old and new testament. Many riddles to figure out, but we have a whole lifetime and it is the guidebook for life. I hardly take anything literally unless it is spoken literally. If it is said that it is a riddle, or a vision, then I read it as a figurative or parabled story. I think the trees also are people. Symbolic... just like the clouds of witnesses (groups of people, not actual clouds), or the fact that Satan roams (what? literally walks?) to and fro looking for whom he may devour. I don't believe there is a person walking to and fro. Spirits don't walk. The Bible is so interesting and so full of gems if you can find the underlying meaning and apply it elsewhere. I find it a great challenge and a blessing! Thanks for bringing up the topic. I will never be a literalist, there is too much in the Bible that is not literal with much richer meaning than the surface meaning.

Thanks WWJDT.

Yes, there is symbology in the first few chapters, specifically chapter two. All through the Bible, trees are used to symbolize people. Same in Gen. 2.

The trees in the garden of Eden were all of the races of man that God made, and Adam, as a "type" of Christ, was to look after them and protect them. Simply put, the trees were... people. smile.gif And we see them today. Asian, African, Indian, Egyptian, Caucasian, and Arab. God loves diversity! Look at all the types of animals! biggrin.gif Same with people. He made all of the races, with Adam to look over them. smile.gif And since Adam failed, Christ came from his line and takes over. Ruling the nations. smile.gif It all goes back to the beginning. smile.gif

Thanks for writing in! biggrin.gif

Good post! Of course, the tree is actually Satan. The fruit of the tree is what you refer to as the conscience. To "Know" or have "Knowledge" is the Hebrew word "YADA" which means to become one in a sexual union or metaphorically to have been transformed from one state to another. "and their eyes were both opened". Now they are tuned into evil as well as good and it is obvious what the default will be after that. It is obvious what fruit is going to come forth from that point forward. Freaky hybrid fruit!
Paul said "Girt up the loins of your mind" The mind is a breeding ground and intended to be the undefiled bed of the most high. We have turned it into the brothel of Satan where fornication with unclean spirits is what is right and good and wise in our newly opened eyes...or in worn out ones.
