Orthodox Jews Burn Hundreds Of New Testaments In Israel

May 28, 2008 10:13 a.m. EST

Amy Beeman - AHN Or-Yehuda, Israel (AHN) -- The torching of about 200 New Testaments near Tel Aviv has shed more light on a perceived persecution of Messianic Jews.

While reports differ slightly on whether or not Deputy Mayor Uzi Aharon meant for the religious text to be burned, what is clear is that he and a group of Jewish religious students went around town collecting materials missionaries had earlier distributed to many of the new Ethiopian immigrants who now live in Israel, because the Jerusalem Post reported Aharon said the information prompted recipients to "go against Judaism."

The Associated Press reported that while it is frowned upon for Christian missionaries to share their message with Jews, it is not illegal.

Reports of the harassment of Messianic Jews, or Jews for Jesus, of whom there are about 10,000 in Israel, have been more rampant as of late.

The Jerusalem Post quoted a religious leader as saying there was a war against Messianic Jews in Israel. Other reports mention the mailbox bomb sent to a Messianic Pastor's house, which his teen son intercepted, incurring serious damage. Last year a church used by Messianic Jews was set ablaze. Authorities say they think Jewish extremists were responsible.

Many Israelis are outraged by the book burning, saying it is both wrong and illegal, as there are two laws against desecrating any religious relics or texts, as CNN reported "One forbids the destruction or desecration of any religious icon or item that a group holds sacred. Another bans people from speaking publicly in a way that offends or humiliates a certain religion."

Others recall the burning of sacred Jewish texts by the Nazis and therefore deplore the act of destroying any religious items.

Accounts vary as to how many orthodox teens were involved with the burnings. One newspaper report said hundreds were involved. Aharon said only a few were responsible, and he was not present at the time.

Actually....there are only a few extremists who would burn the NT, Adullam.

Most would not disrespect our scriptures like that. Those who did that are on the fringes.

Its the same when a young Jewish believer was bombed when he opened what he thought was a Purim package. Several in the Orthodox community came to see him in the hospital KNOWING he was a believer in Yeshua.

They still cared for him and DENOUNCED this type of behavior. Burning scripture is not what they do.

They remember how the Nazis burned their Holy books.

And as you can see from the links that were provided.....the WORLD bans the Bible. More so the world than any Jewish group.

The Jewish believers in Israel are strong in the Lord. I have much respect for them. But they do need our prayers. And they do not want these things to be a cause for anger to build up for fellow Jews. All these attacks are ways that Satan is trying to cause strife to develop.

As I mentioned.....there are several in the Orthodox community that denounce this kind of behavior.

Do not drive a wedge between the Jews and Christians. This is not coming from God.

Just because someone criticizes Israel for something, does not make them antisemtic anymore than if one criticizes America for something it does not make them anti-american.
Justice
Why the upheaval? Do you not know that many today would crucify our Lord again, even not recognize him and brand him as a dangerous man?
Do you know how many Pharysees thee are in this world? How many who want nothing more than to be Judge and Jury?

But trust the Lord God, for even of those many will be saved.
For not by their deeds, but by Faith and the Blood of the Lamb will they be saved.

Israel's Messianic Jews Under Attack

Friday, Jun. 06, 2008 By TIM MCGIRK/JERUSALEM Time Magazine

The flyers appeared everywhere inside the Jewish settlement of Ariel, on car windshields, telephone poles, and in bus shelters. "Beware," it read, "these are the members of the Jewish Missionary Cult. They are baptizing Jews into Christianity." Included was a photo of Pastor David Ortiz and his address.

Ortiz didn't give it a thought. His Jewish neighbors liked him, and so did Ariel's mayor, who found Ortiz, originally from Brooklyn, useful in recruiting funds and political support from American and German Evangelicals for this stone-clad settlement on a breezy hilltop inside Palestinian territory.

But somebody disliked Ortiz and his beliefs enough to try to kill him and his family. By chance, Ortiz and his wife Leah were gone on March 20th when an unknown person dropped off a bomb disguised as a holiday gift package loaded with candy and chocolates. When Ortiz's 15 year-old son Ami plucked off a chocolate, it detonated a bomb powerful enough to blow out all the apartment's windows apartment and to be heard a mile away. The bomb was packed with nails, screws and needles. Doctors found over 100 piece of metal embedded in the boy's body by the blast, which sheared off the skin and muscle on his legs and chest. The teenager survived, but still faces six more operations of skin grafts and the removal of shrapnel from his eyes. Whoever did it, says Ortiz, knew "that we adults wouldn't open up the Purim package — it would be the kids."

the 'action' was not representative of Israel or Israeli's but was the perogative of a small group

the implication that it is, was, or might have been representative of Israel, Israelis or Jews is antisemitic and occurs daily, even in the United Nations

Israel is well able to handle criticism as Jewish individuals as well as enlightened Gentiles, and many Philo-semitic Christians are aware of. But Israel nor its general populace do not go out of their way to persecute Messianic Jews - suicide bombers prefer to do that to all Jews, Messianic or otherwise. Best then to concentrate on them and pray for their 'salvation'.

What happend to dear Ami was not just terrible...but evil. Who would do this to a child? I would not be surprised if this was a Muslim terrorist attack because they do this exact kind of thing. And it would please them to not only kill a Jew, but to cause strife and anger among them.

Dunno. Here's the rest of the story.

Messianic Jews, as these Jews who believe in Jesus are called, number just a few in Israel — anywhere between 6,000 and 15,000 — but they provoke hatred all out of proportion to their meager numbers. Many orthodox Jews view them as traitors for joining the Christian faith, which for centuries has persecuted Jews. One Messianic Jew, Tzvi Sadan, a teacher and editor, recalls telling his father, a Holocaust survivor, that he had accepted Jesus as his savior. "My Dad flipped out. He said that the SS guards in the camp had 'God is With Us' written on their belts. He told me, 'You've joined the enemy.' But he calmed down a bit when he saw my prayer shawl."

Some rabbis also view the Messianic Jews' conversion as part of a grand Evangelical scheme to fulfill Biblical prophecy (which requires the conversion of the Jews) and hasten the Messiah's arrival. Messianic Jews observe Judaism's rites, holidays and customs but believe in Jesus as the Messiah.

But lately, the outrage among extremist orthodox Jews has spilled into violence. Even after the Ariel bombing it has continued. Last month, when the deputy mayor of Or Yehuda, a town near Tel Aviv, found out that Messianic Jews had been passing out copies of the New Testament to a community of poor Ethiopian Jews, he ordered the books to be collected and they were set alight in a bonfire. He later apologized and said the Bibles had been burned accidentally. "If somebody had done that in Europe to Jewish Torahs, you can image what sort of a reaction that would provoke here," says Ortiz. To be fair, commentators and officials in Israel were quick to condemn the act, comparing it to the infamous book burning by Nazis.

Messianic Jews living in the Negev Desert also say they are routinely harassed and attacked by yeshiva students, some inspired by Yad L'achem, a religious organization dedicated to stamping out Christian missionary activities in Israel. Random acts of anti-Christian violence have also occurred: last October in Jerusalem, a church was fire-bombed, and several days after Christmas, a German pilgrim who was returning from Bethlehem carrying a large wooden cross was attacked by a gang of ultra-orthodox youths who smashed the cross into splinters. These are isolated attacks, and Christians living in Israel say that as long as they refrain from missionary work — prohibited by the Israeli government — they are left free to worship.

Israel finds itself in a predicament: it wants to welcome Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land out of goodwill and for tourism revenue, but it also wants to keep exuberant missionaries from trying to convert Jews. At the same time, news of these attacks — especially the Ariel bombing and the Bible-burning — has circulated widely among Christian churches around the world. "I'm getting calls from Norway," says Leah Ortiz, "asking if Christians are being persecuted in Israel, and I say 'No, of course not.' What happened to our son, this isn't religion. It's insanity."

So far, police have failed to make any arrests in the Ortiz bombing. But whoever assembled the bomb knew what he was doing and had access to plastic explosives, probably stolen from the Israeli military. "We're afraid that whoever did this," says Ortiz, " might try it again. With us, they crossed the line, and we're afraid of it happening to someone else."

Given the hardship Messianic Jews face in Israel and his son's multiple injuries, would the Ortiz move his family back to Brooklyn? "No way" Ortiz replies. "Jesus wasn't born in Brooklyn. He was born here. We're staying." With reporting by Aaron J. Klein/Jerusalem

What happend makes me cry.

But the most important thing is that Christians around the world do not start to come down on the Jews who do not believe in Yeshua.

Don't you see what is going on? This is just another ploy from Satan to bring hate to the Jews.

I pray they find out who did this to precious Ami. But more importantly...I pray that this person truely repents for it because this person hurt the apple of Gods eye when he hurt Ami. And he/they, will answer to God for it.

Regardless the 'action' was not representative of Israel or Israeli's but was the perogative of a small group of Orthodox Jews. There are over 10 different Orthodox Jewish denominations in Israel ... Lubavitch, Satmar, Bobover, Bratislaver, Mizrachi, Bostoner, Israeli Orthodox ........ which one did the bombing? None of them. It was a small group.

The implication that it is, was, or might have been representative of Israel, Israelis or Jews is antisemitic and occurs daily.

Israel is well able to handle criticism as Jews, enlightened Gentiles, and many Philo-semitic Christians are aware. But neither Israel nor its general populace go out of their way to persecute Messianic Jews - suicide bombers prefer to do that to all Jews, Messianic or otherwise.

Best then to concentrate on them and pray for their 'salvation'. And, if one loves Messianic Jews perhaps one might think of financially supporting one of their ministries? One must never look for an opportunity to be subtlely or smugly anti-Jewish at the expense of the persecution of Messianic Jews by another small minority of Orthodox Jews, especially when one has criticized Messianic Jews in the past (on this forum) for being proud of being Messianic and Jewish.

42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. 43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Mondoux! Is there nothing that happens in the world that doesn't devolve into a claim of racism towards the Jews by Christians? Do you know what "ideι fixe" is? I wish sentimental types would grow up. You are the one drawing attention to this. Enough already.

Adullam...

I have a friend and sister in the Lord who is a Professor at the local Christian University. She taught my Jewish Roots class at church.

I learned much from her and some others about the history, and I know alot about what still goes on, all in the name of Christianity.

What jumped out at me was when Mrs. Ortiz said that she was getting calls even from Norway about if Jews are attacking Christians.

Most people don't know about all the attacks that have happend to the Jews from so called Christians.

Ships of them sank in the ocean because nobody would let them dock. Christians in Poland rose up and slaughtered every Jew in their village because of anger. The Holocaust. All perpetrated by Christians.

A claim? It is fact unfortunately. And I see the same thing starting up again.

And you will have to tell me what indeι fixe means.
