Jerusalem Post on GAFCON
.... However, Anglicans are as divided over Israel as they over homosexuality. While the meeting will focus on the current crisis facing the church, some Anglican and Jewish supporters of the gathering hope the presence in Jerusalem this June of conservative Anglican bishops from every continent will present an opportunity to broaden Israel's support in the developing world.

.......

Organizers of the meeting told The Jerusalem Post this was not merely a gathering of an anti-gay coalition of bishops, but a meeting for "orthodox" Anglicans to be "getting on with things, doing the work of the church." Jerusalem was chosen as the venue as a sign of their commitment "to a land that is our common heritage." The meeting would also "bring fellowship and bear testimony to the Christian communities in Israel/Palestine" that have been under intense pressure from Islamist militants.

.......

Over the past few years the Anglican Communion has endorsed a number of anti-Israel agendas and causes. In 2006, the Church of England adopted a call for divestment while several church-linked charities have demonized Israel for its security policies.

As a member of the Anglican communion I think it's great that this conference seems likely to provide a home for all of us who adhere to Bible based Chrsitian doctrine. I also have a sense of affiliation with Israel, but I pray that through this initiative emphasis is given to supporting the Palestinian Christians who live in such difficult circumstances among the Jews and Muslims.

Gal 6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. Gal 6:16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace [be] on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

The body of Christ is the Israel of God...

Rom 2:28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither [is that] circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: Rom 2:29 But he [is] a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision [is that] of the heart, in the spirit, [and] not in the letter; whose praise [is] not of men, but of God.

Hi fervent,

No argument from me on the points you made. I absolutely agree and I had pretty much given up hope that anyone here would pick-up on the application of this aspect of Christian faith, which I think the delegates to GAFCON need to keep well to the front of their minds when visiting the historic holy land.

Dispensational (and I think historic premillennial) perspectives seem to be driving a very wrong attitude to modern day Israel which is resulting in great misery to many Christians and Muslims who have their homes in and around the Levant. While clear statistics are difficult to establish it is evident that absolute numbers of Christians in the region have over the last century, fallen well behind the Jewish and Muslim populations. Christians living in Palestine find themselves oppressed by Jews because they are Palestinian, and similarly persecuted by Muslims because they are not Muslim.

Jesus’ teaching about the final judgement is related in Matthew’s Gospel: “37Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' 40And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.
Mathew 25, ESV

This chapter effectively commands Christians to actively care for one another, and yet it seems many Christians are so confused about our brothers and sisters in the Lord, that we instead attach our loyalty to a people whose heritage is familiar and comfortable to us.

The GAFCON conference is important to the Anglican communion, and in particular to those of us who see the Lords teaching being compromised. It is wonderful that the leaders of the conference have chosen to go back to the land of God’s revelation as symbolically returning to that faith. I just hope the symbolism is correctly interpreted and practiced. It is a return to Christianity, not a return to ethnic Judaism.
