Americans: “Media Assault Our Morals 1dsz5f1.gif

http://thetrumpet.com/index.php?page=article&id=3268

In most American living rooms, the placement of the furniture can be accurately predicted by one main factor. It is not how space might be most efficiently used or how one might better converse with other members of the household, but rather how everyone can get the best view of the television while maintaining easy access to the snacks.

After all, the average American adult watches tv for 1,700 hours a year—over 4½ hours a day, every day.

How is this tv binging affecting our nation’s morals? The Culture and Media Institute has released a report called “The Media Assault on Moral Values,” which reveals that people are pretty concerned about the answer to that question, even if they express their concern from well-worn positions on the sofa.

The study draws four primary conclusions.

First, people believe the media have contributed to a moral decline. Most agree that the media’s overall effect is negative, with only 9 percent of Americans claiming media have a positive effect on morals. Slightly surprising is that most recognize the news media as a culprit; only 11 percent feel the news media impact us positively. Less shocking: the highest percentage—73 percent—blame Hollywood.

Second, those who watch tv heavily are less likely to take personal responsibility. The study dubs those who watch an hour or less of television per evening “light television viewers”; earning the label “heavy television viewer” requires at least four hours per evening. Thus, the average American qualifies. Heavy tv viewers are far less likely to contribute to charity and volunteer their time. They are more likely to feel that the government has a responsibility to provide for their retirement (presumably so they can watch more tv). They are less likely to “respect the rights of others by practicing classical virtues like honesty, reliability and fairness.” They hold a more lax view toward issues like pre-marital sex, abortion and homosexuality.

Third, the media undermine religion. As the study put it, “The more a person watches television, the less likely he is to value religious principles and obedience to God.” Heavy tv watchers are far less likely to attend a church regularly.

Fourth, the media have a seductive effect. The report says, “The more a person watches tv, the less likely he is to believe the media are influencing the nation’s moral values.” A full 20 percent more light tv viewers believe the media harms moral values than heavy tv viewers. People who watch television for longer periods are gradually desensitized to the immorality the media portray and find it more palatable.

This study makes it clear that television has a negative effect on our lives. To read more about these effects and to understand how you can better combat them without throwing away your tv, read “Beware the Stranger in Your Home.”

Court OKs F-Word In Front of Kids

Ruling Permits Unedited Profanities to Air During Any Time of Day

Yesterday, in a 2-1 decision, a U.S. appeals court in New York City has cleared the way for television networks to use the "F-word" and "S-word" in front of children at any time of the day. The courts have essentially taken your property -- the broadcast airwaves -- and handed ownership of them over to the networks to do with as they please.

We urgently need you to take action today.

Please take a moment to write to your representatives in Congress and to the President of the United States to express your outrage and demand a solution that reflects the will of the people -- not the will of two judges in New York City and a handful of powerful entertainment industry executives.

It won't take but a moment of your time -- but your action, combined with the voices of tens of thousands of other PTC supporters could make a huge difference. Send this letter to your elected officials, then forward this note to everyone in your address book.

When the FCC ruled that the use of the "F-word" and "S-word" primetime television broadcasts of the 2002 and 2003 Billboard Music Awards violated the broadcast indecency law, Fox and other broadcasters filed suit in federal court to overturn the ruling.

They are demanding the right to use the public airwaves to broadcast profane and indecent content regardless of time of day; regardless of how many impressionable young children are watching; regardless of the proof of the harm this content does to young viewers; regardless of the fact that there is overwhelming public support for the FCC's crack-down on indecent content; regardless of the fact that just one year ago the House by a 10-1 margin and the Senate unanimously authorized the FCC to increase indecency fines ten-fold.

Today's ruling is an insult to the American public.

Hollywood manipulated the legal system by shopping around for a court that would be favorable to their arguments, and they found two federal judges in New York City to impose their will on the nation. The Court's decision runs contrary to nearly 80 years of jurisprudence about the publicly-owned airwaves, not to mention the overwhelming sense of the nation. Community decency standards should not be decided by two judges in New York.

We believe the two judges on the Second Circuit Court are wrong, and we are urging our public servants to correct this gross injustice. If you share our outrage and concern, please tell the FCC to pursue whatever steps are necessary to remedy the misguided opinions of those judges, including an appeal of this case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Don't let this outrage go unanswered. Please speak up today. Submit the form below to let your voice be heard. And don't forget to forward this e-mail to everyone in your address book.

With urgent thanks,

Tim Winter

Parents Television Council -- Because our children are watching.

I chucked out my TV years ago. I buy a DVD now and then that I watch on my PC. That way I get to choose what I watch. I do not miss it at all. When I had one, it was normal to head for the TV after dinner and sit down for and evening of watching whatever. To be honest, if I have one, I watch, so I chose to not have it.

C I agree with you on chucking the boob-tube. The news that is on these days is about 5-10 minutes of disinformation or misinformation and then the remaining time in their slot becomes almost like a talk show with a "expert guest" speculating and supposing this and that. The American masses have been so dumbed down over the years that we just sit there soaking that trash in. I believe that is one of the major reasons for america being so illiterate. What happened to the kid who used to sit down and read for an example "The adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. To close I just think that it is very sad. Love you all.offgrid.

Yep. since I chucked it, I rediscovered life again. Now I am so busy with other things, that I sometimes look at the time and go "Oh no its almost midnight " and I am still not done with the things that interest me.
At the moment I am building a MONSTER CURRY because I am getting 14 people for lunch tomorrow. biggrin.gif
I must still work out how, but I want to make pumpkin, with onion seed, dried peaches cooked in syrup and spice tea, and I hope to finish it off with cubed paw-paw and sliced almonds on top. HA, I think it might just work. I am also baking potatoes in the oven and turning them into huge "fries" spiced with chilly .

Oh well, there you are, as if anybody cared what I am going to make laugh.gif but I am telling this , because I have had 15 guests last week, and now this week 14 and some more next week. On Monday people are coming over to share about the Lord. Life without a TV is full, you just have to take that first step. Its like giving up cigarettes. You think life will stop and then it does not, it starts.

Its now 6:30 pm and I still want to finish a painting for tomorrow as well. Who knows, maybe somebody will buy?

You can PM me any time . I love making curries as well. I grind my own spices and make the curry from scratch. smile.gif Lots of fresh ginger and chillies.

I live far away from the city , so I have to cook everything myself. Baking bread , cooking and freezing, keeping soup on the stove during winter, for those unexpected guests smile.gif
Come spring, Lord willing, I am planting a veggie garden with all I can think of. I want some Chinese veg as well.
