Gays Flock to Fla. Panhandle for Holiday

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. - Souvenir shops lining this sugary white Panhandle beach display Confederate flag beach towels, window decals and T-shirts. Hooters and other bars fly POW-MIA, Marine and Navy flags and cater to the sailors and Marines from the nearby base. Vacationing Southern families usually fill the hotels and condominiums in this slice of paradise long nicknamed "The Redneck Riviera." But every Memorial Day they mostly stay away as this town becomes more like trendy Miami Beach - 700 miles and a world away.

Starting in the mid-1980s, gay men from New Orleans and other nearby cities began gathering here for a three-day party that has grown into one of the South's largest gay gatherings, attracting more than 60,000 people in 2004 before hurricanes Ivan and Dennis destroyed many beach roads and buildings.

Following two years of rebuilding, organizers anticipate 50,000 this weekend.

While no one can recall any violent incidents targeting the gay tourists, the raucous weekend of entertainment including concerts, Cirque de Soleil-like dance troupes and female impersonator RuPaul hasn't always sat well with everyone - although that may be subsiding.

"We used to have groups that picketed but for the most part even that has gone away - there are just some religious groups that have a problem with it now," said Jim Goldman, an organizer of the charity Art Against AIDS, which receives a portion of the proceeds of the events.

Gordon Godfrey, pastor of the 2,000-member Marcus Pointe Baptist Church, said many in his congregation are offended by the activities. Instead of flying rainbow flags to symbolize gay pride, people should fly American flags on Memorial Day, Godfrey said.

"I think what goes on out there on the beach on Memorial Day is surprising to a lot of people who move into our community," he said. "I personally feel like it's just inappropriate behavior from a biblical standpoint."

Jessie Jablonski, an Air Force retiree, and his wife, Trish, said they avoid the beach on Memorial Day weekend.

"It's just not my kind of crowd," Jessie Jablonski said laughing, as the longtime Pensacola couple fished for flounder and snapper off a bridge one recent afternoon.

"Everybody knows that's gay pride weekend, and we don't even come out this way because of the crowds," said Trish Jablonski. She added her surprise that the event had flourished in the conservative area. "I'd say this is a pretty homophobic place."

University of West Florida sociologist Dallas Blanchard said the answer to the muted opposition is easy: the gay visitors spend.

"You have the fundamentalist churches who always rant and rave against the (Memorial Day) event and there are always letters to editor complaining about it, but it has been tolerated because the money is green," said Blanchard, who has long studied Panhandle social trends.

Kirk Newkirk, who rents kayaks, WaveRunners and pontoon boats on the beach, thinks the attitude among many locals about the weekend has evolved.

"Everybody has gotten much more liberal around here. Now the attitude is lot more 'Just take it as it goes,'" he said. (When God's people are silent, will God himself take up the cause?) "There has always been a gay community on Pensacola Beach even back when I was a lifeguard out here in the 1960s. Somehow it just progressed into this huge party with thousands of people."

The Pensacola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce doesn't know how the event compares with other annual events in terms of dollars spent but it is major, said Ed Schroeder, the chamber's vice president of tourism and development. Other tourists are told about the event if they make reservations, so no one arrives unaware.

"We have rarely gotten complaints," he said.

Johnny Chisholm, who began organizing the beach parties and a huge celebration at the downtown Pensacola Civic Center 14 years ago, also organizes gay weekend events at Orlando's Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort Paris.

"For the most part the public here has been very receptive to it. There are not many events that you sell out all the hotels," Chisholm said.

Both were our Student Council Presidents during that time and I have conversed with Charlie on many issues over the years since then. However, I am at odds with Senator Bill Nelson, Mel Martinez and my Congressman Bill Young over this Lobbyist written “Comprehensive Illegal Amnesty” Bullony trying to make its way through our Congress. My constant prayer before the throne of Almighty God and ‘without ceasing’ is that ‘no rain’ fall on this state, until these yo-yo’s begin standing up for We The People and the Working-Class Americans who put them into office. I am sick and tired of our elected officials representing Big Business, Corporate Elites, Illegal Aliens and everyone with an “Open Borders Agenda” that is displacing more and more working Americans every day. Illegal Aliens have invaded my home state and have been systematically stealing the identities and jobs of US Citizens and now Congress wants to reward them with citizenship! How much more of a ‘slap in the face’ do we deserve by our ‘bought and paid for’ US Congressmen?

I pray that states like Missouri FLOOD and DROWN in their sea of illegal humanity for giving them state driver’s licenses and photo identification cards. The whole lot of them can be washed into the Gulf Of Mexico and out to sea for their crimes against We The People of these United States. This Congress had better straighten up their act, or my prayers will be for this once great country to be struck with the fist of God directly in the ‘breadbasket,’ so the Gulf waters rise all the way up to the Great Lakes and beyond and divide America in two! The illegal invaders can have the Western half, but God knows we will drive all of the illegal vermin from this Eastern half. This bible thumper has never been so angry over anything in his life than this current “North American Union” Fiasco and the 20 million illegal aliens killing 25 US Citizens every day here in the USA. The entire state of Florida can dry up and blow away, as our water tables plummet out of existence and Lake Okeechobee becomes a dried up lakebed. Let the alligators crawl on their bellies to Georgia for a single drop of water . . .

There is a big difference. Women are choosing to end the life of their own children. Which is worse – to end the life of a child in the womb, or to boil them alive for food?

We cannot force women into following the moral framework established in Christians, because the “Rule Of Law” gives them a ‘choice.’ We can disagree with the law and do everything to change it, but until that time we must live with their right to choose. God's hand of protection is slowly lifting off of our land because we are taking Him out of everything. I was just watching a news piece last night. There is a lady fighting to have the Koran in the court room so it can be used to swear in people. The main dog in her fight is, "We can't be predjudice and favor one holy scripture over the next.

Most US citizens see this as our govenment sitting on their hands, though we have to rememeber that God moves the heart of men. If God is not moving these men to act, this tells me that HIS hand is lifting...

I live a mere 50 miles to the east of Pensacola. Yes, we need rain badly all across the panhandle. After monday I'd be praying for some clorox to rain down on Pensacola.

Seriously though, it's memorial day weekend for crying out loud and I garuntee that the tourist industry in Pensacola would make more money by welcoming families and NOT giving the into the queers.

My area is also reliant on the tourist for it's economy, and we're at max capacity this weekend. I've noticed a heck of a lotta people who have left Pensacola for the weekend because of the gays.

Interestingly enough, 15 miles east of Pensacola Beach is Navarre which unofficially boasts the only nude beach I've ever heard about in the panhandle. What's interesting is how that whole area gets hit by the more hurricanes and tropical storms than any other one particular area.

Pensacola may not get the clorox disinfecting I'd like to see, but God does seem to wash it out in his own way.

A torrent of illegal aliens, rebellious children, violence, disrespect of government officials (who were placed by God), killer storms, drought, and disease are all symptoms of a nation that has forsaken God and pursued lawlessness, idolatry, sensuality and perverse sexuality (just watch a little primetime TV), plus we've told God to get out of our public square. A gentlemen will not intrude where he's not wanted--leaving us to our own consequences.

Were it not for God's mercy and grace, in response to the prayers of his people, these symptoms would have already become earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami, catastrophic terrorist attacks, complete economic failure, and famine.

However, these are probably on the way.

As far as abortion goes, the government established by the people, and for the people, established a woman's choice to be above God's law. When the government won't act to correct this, God will. He'll even bring millions of foreigners in to a land, if necessary, to turn up the heat.

Until President Bush has the spiritual backbone to go on national TV and call for repentance and prayer over the sins of our nation, and calls us to return to the God of the Bible, and we actually DO, we're going to keep sliding down the slope to the destination of every other great empire of the past.

May God protect his own and have mercy on the lost.
